I would say it depends on what kind of riding you do. Regardles I think it's best to run some type of Outerware. I'm running a UNI with and Outerware airbox cover and I ride trails. I haven't had any problems yet. I think I'm going to put an Outerware directly over my filter just to be sure.

so u can get an outerwears for the filter also for the uni?
i dont ride aroud alot of water, if i do we got a river we cross in one trail but i just dont ride fast thru it and im fine, i had heard something about if u run without a lid the boot on your carb can come off real easy or something like that

I'm pretty sure the Outerware for the K&N will fit the UNI. Not positive though. I try to avoid the water too bit it's always muddy around here:devil: so you get it anyhow.

As for the air boot coming off I don't think that having the lid off will affect it.

I run a K&N with no lid and no outerwear. I ride in a much mud as I can find. Mud is not a problem except you'll have to clean your filter more often. Water is a problem. Once in a while I'll hit some water going way too fast and it will sputter but after a second it will clear right up. I also drilled about five 1/4 inch holes in the bottom of my air box to let the water drain. It adds a little performance riding without a lid, you may need to rejet and it sounds mean!

This is my friend riding in the mud on his 300ex, but I ride the same places he does. Only I don't get stuck;)

Im going to miss having a stock quad, the 426 Im getting needs more air, so the lid comes off, it sucks though my brother has been running his with no lid and any time it is muddy it gets in the airbox. I used to go through some deep water also, half my pipe wouild be submerged in water with the airbox dry as can be. :(

i have my lid off right now and i was going for a ride behind my apartment and the cahaba river runs behind my apartment and we cross part of it its not too deep and i bottomed out on a rock so i was kind of tipping off my swingarm skid and i rocked it and got loose in seconds but when i got home about 1.5 in of water was in my airbox and rocks also
so i was so worried but i cleaned everything and no dirt or water was in my air tract, so im rejetting and going with the lid back on

but heres the thing i just got the 400 about 2 months ago now but i have no time to ride and i had a banshee and raptor before this and on my banshee i always ran no lid and never had this happen with it and went thru alot of deeper water

I have a 250x/350x conversion w/ 400ex carb so it needs all the air it can get and i have my air lid off K&N w/o outterware and i live in ohio so there's every condition imaginable and ive had no probs with it

I had my lid off, and once it got a ***** load of water in it from riding, that made me deside REALLY fast to re-jet and put it back on. I am running the k&n w/ outerwears. I have seen the k&n filter that takes place of the lid, its a pre-filter thing. I would run that with the k&n filter.
