I was wondering if Honda changed their frames during the years they produced the 250r. I am looking at an '86 trx250r frame for 500cdn. Is there anything known to go wrong with this year? Will any year motor fit in it? Is thereany one year, better than the other? Thank you. Will.

Why an '88? Is it better than an '86? if so, how come?

I am not sure.........but I thought the 87 & 88 had a longer swingarm or something........pretty sure they are different. I will move this thread to the correct forum. you might get more response there.

you can use any year frame you want. The 86 frame is the heaviest and I have heard it is also the strongest, but the 88-89s had a better geometry(a-arns foward 1 in and swingarm shotented about 1 1/2 in).

the '86-'89 motors will all work in any year frame, although the engines to have some internal differnce.the frames do have some differnce's. the 86-87 have a 1 inch longer swing arm then the 88-89 and the swing arm pivot on the 86-87 is not solid all the way through, it uses a sleeve type bracket in the center to encorperate an engine mount. the 88-89 swing arm pivot is solid in that from one end to the other its one tube, and an engine mount bracket is welded to the frame instead of being used in the swing arm pivot.the 88-89 is prefered because when you buy some after maket parts like a swing arm then maybe up grade to a frame later all the after market frames are modeled from the 88-89. the foot peg area on the 86-87 is also differnt from the 88-89. the way that mount and stuff.the 86-87 grab bar is differnt then the 88-89.the 88-89 a arms are also differnt, they are +1 forward comapered to the 86-87, which makes both bikes the same legnth but the weight bias is one inch forward on the 88-89 because as i said the swing arm is 1 inch sorter. many people say that makes the 88-89 a better handling bike. thats not to say that 86-87 is not good, i have an 86 frame but have changed to a -1 after market swing arm and aftermarket +1 a arms, hence the same geomitry as the 88-89

Since it is so hard to find 250r frames that are in good shape, i would jump on the first frame that i found that was in good condition. If you plan on racing mx you will proably buy extended aarms and a new swingarm adventually which will eliminate the major difference between the first and second generation frame designs. I belive you can still buy a 86/87 frame from honda and it runs like 850.

Hope i helped.
