I removed the choke flap thingy on my stock carb. I only removed the plate, not the shaft.

There was a little improvement in throttle response, a bit crisper. It is a marginal improvement. I had no problems. Maybe a little harder to start if it is freezing cold.

I would recomend doing it.

Do it for sure. You should remove the shaft as well. When you do both it makes a big enough difference that you should re-jet to take full advantage of the added airflow. You will feel a very noticeable improvement in throttle response and power. Not neck snapping power mind you but definately worth the trouble. You will have to experiment with the main jet sizes depending on your setup but you will probably end up a size or two bigger. You should put in a #42 pilot jet right off the bat and it will start up just fine without the choke and idle great and bottom end jetting will be fine.

in the winter, I ride in temps as low as -20, so would removing my choke be a good idea? or should I just put the 42 piolet in, and leave the choke in?

could something like this be done to the stock 300ex carb?

yeah, #42. I said #40 above but I'll edit that so it's right.

I'm using a #40 in mine and its works great. I ride in the same type of weather and as long as you have the jetting right it'll start easy. Mine actually starts better, I just give the throttle a couple of pumps and she starts right up.

how well would that work in the weather here, like I said it gets as cold as -20 when I ride.

well here in Nebraska we see below freezing alot upwards of -10 and it still works for me

I bet at -20, it could be a real ***** to start. But it will start. And once its warmed up, it wont be an issue.

Well I am gonna order my 42 piolet jet on monday...and when it gets here I will take out the 'ol choke and see how things go. How hard is it to re-instal the choke, if I ever need it?

i bought me pilot and main jet from my honda dealer for about 8 bucks each. i took off my choke last night, and made it a little richer and it works very good

i personally think it is a waste of time, but thats an opinion. i talked to someone on here that leaves the choke in on their 500ex. i think removing the choke only showed 5cfm difference. also, the choke blade might deflect the air through the carb giving an advantage. its just personal perferance. i did remove it and then i put it back on because i felt nothing besides hard starts in cold weather.

Well i have K_Fulks old carburator and when i got it the choke was already removed..and i put a 45 pilot in....i dont know if thats wayy to rich or not..but until i finally get the hefer started i'll see just how rich it is...but its always been a pain starting my 300ex..even with a choke..i dont know how hard it will be w/ out one..
