We just put the WB 1850 cam in my sons X and the rocker was making contact with the valve spring retainer and causing a ticking. Could be the cam chain is stretched.

well I know on the 400ex ticking in the head is the rockers ticking against the subrockers, this is fixed by retuning the valve clearences.-darren

Has it made the noise since you put the parts in or was it quiet at first?

I would guess the valvas are off since it was ticking b4 you added the parts. In the tech section on this site I believe there is a How-to on adjusting valves so read it and double check what you done to make sure you got it right.

could it be the piston slap...

could be a cam chain tensioner. I'd first readjust the valves though and make sure that nothing it comming into contact with anything else. With a fresh bore I doubt it is piston slap. Piston slap is usually described as a knocking not a ticking but everyones preception is different. That is why it is so hard to diog. a noise when you can't hear it.

Thanks for all the help. I think im going to check my valves first. I had my dealer do it, But I dont think they did theme right because they couldn't fix my fourwheeler and my dads friend knew exacly what it was.

with a new cam, there is a good chance that the valves need to be adjusted differently than stock. also, i see that you have new rockers. well, i am sure you know this, but some cams require hardened rockers and other aftermarket cams require non-hardened rockers. i would check the valves again to be on the safe side. good luck

The cam That I got is a white brothers mild cam its almost close to stock. So I don't I half to worry about that to much. Im pretty much convinced that my valve's need adjusting. Thanks for all the help.

This maybe not the same thing but on my 1976 Ford F150, with a high performance 390, we were adjusting the carburetor and the float got stuck and of course about a cup of gas went straight into the engine. This caused possibly warped valves or they maybe even sticking... We don't know yet... It may not help and it may help but it makes that loud knocking noise like it threw a rod or something.
