400ex 3rd huh well lets see if dirt wheels publishes that the old outdated slow , well they bacicly call it a piece of crap 400 beat out some of the new oh so awsome z's yfz's and the other HIGH tech:rolleyes: quads that got their roots from the 400 ,and basicly tried to copy and add features to 1up our loved Honda. to me the 4oo is still awesome and has plenty of motor stock and potential for modification I'm sure the new 450r IS great BUT it will do one thing slower than the 400 and thats START;) Congrats to Honda and our 450 and 400 :D

stupid driver

I guess honda DID do their homework on this one. But well well well, ancient, POS, slow, bulky, worthless, hated by all dirtwheels publisher's 400ex STILL ON THE PODIUM. :D

LONG LIVE THE EX

11-26-2003, 05:05 PM
well stock for stock, ride a yfz then get on a 400ex, i agree with dirtwheels but do some work to both of them, the gap narrows up quite a bit, i think the only thing holding the ex back is the motor and brakes arent quite as good

that was a very built 400ex.

i can almost bet, more money was spent on that 400ex to get it ready for the Baja than any of those other bikes.

400ex is a great foundation...just takes more $$$ to get it ready for competition. Z400s have the same problem.

11-26-2003, 05:35 PM
i dont know about that 450r, if im not riding my 400ex ill be riding a yfz

thats great .. i hope some of the good racers keep there 400ex to keep them on top in the magazines..

i remember i used to get little kids thats awesome and stuff and point to the 4 wheeler ... now its like oh well it shoudl be so and so ... lol

smart *** kids :D

just because it came in third doesnt mean he had 15+ in it??

i like that outdated techonlogy .. less parts , less headachs

I bet that 5th place yfz had plenty of money spent on it too. It's funny there were no Daled or Zs in the top 5.

In all of the high-performance shoot-outs, dirtwheels uses a stock ex, a highly modded Z, piped predators, and a piped yfz. Can someone tell me why they think the 400ex is a dinosaur? Of course a bone stock ex wont keep up with any of these on a track. With a few mods the ex would have kept up with any of them.

Is it lonely back there Yamaha? Oh wait, their used to it!

Congrads Honda!

I'm glad to see the old ex right in the hunt. They will be right in there for a long time too.

Maybe for the motor but that would be it!

They hardly leave anything stock on the bikes!

why do you guys bash the best quad on the market today, its odd the 450r had the best riders on it:rolleyes:

i b et the yfz didnt have a whole lot done to the motor compared to the other quads up there

you guys that go by bajas results should all go buy ds 650s

actually, i doubt the 400ex had much done motor wise at all, people that run these all the time know highly modded motors are NOT the ticket to a 1000 mile race.

cool 300ex

Well thats good but i still like the yfz450. I think it looks alot better and will do ever bit as good as a 450R or even better. Most of it was rider skill for that event.

To me it helps confirm that Honda didn't just slap out a ATV to compete against the YFZ. For 2 out of 2 of them to finish in a 800 mile race tells me that they did spend the time to engineer and test it right.

I have been seriously debating on which way i'd go either the R or the YFZ. Having read several articles and reports on the YFZ it sounds as though you need to put a new exhaust system on it to improve HP from 42 to 48 but the R just needs the HRC kit to run the same numbers. So it seems that going the Honda route will be about $700 - $800 cheaper for the same power(including the MSRP savings). As far as suspension and stuff they seem almost a wash.

Of course i'm going to reserve judgement until some real world testing has been done. The proof is in the pudding and Yamaha has certainly proven itself.

tha yamaha is definetly cheaper if your looking for power, just remove the airbox lid and spark arrestor core and rejet it and cam mod or spend 300 bucks on the 450r to make it not as fast:huh for 300 you could even slap on a slip on on the yfz and a aftermarket filter, remove the lid, do the cam mod and rejet,

ill bet you honda spent time doing work to that 450r internally to make it fast enough and durable, honda can do anything , there just trying to sell quads, i think yamaha is trying to satisfy customers wants

to me the 450r is like a z 400 or something with diff front shocks, trail quad that you put big bucks into to be serious

well all just have to wait and see when the 450r is out for a couple months

I would bet good money that stock vs. stock the 450R is a big improvement over the Z400 in both performance AND handling. I would place that bet based purely on the numbers/facts.

So what does that make a 400ex?

I've talked to a guy that went down to Texas and rode the Honda, he thought the YFZ had more power, turned better because the Honda has the bigger gas tank and sits higher, and started much better. He said they had all kinds of problems getting it started with the kicker.

Wow alot of opinions on a quad that noone has ridden yet but, the ones that have ridden it seem to be more impressed than the net critics. The thing is the Banshee had a faster motor than the 250R, The Raptor had a faster motor than a 400Ex yet the Hondas was far better racers. So what if the YFZ is a lil faster it doesn't mean it will be the better racer. I wouldn't be surprised if the R was faster.

lots of people have seen the 450r and ridden them big whoopy doo

Have you ridden one or are you getting a ride review from someone who knows someone who has?
