I want to make my nearly bone stock 400 a 440. I saw some kits on ebay that had a wiseco 12.5:1 piston. Is that more or less compression? Also, If I bought a kit, had my cylinder bored & sleeve installed, what else do I need? Hardened rockers, valves springs etc.? thanks in advance:)

you'll really need more cash i am prolly gonna get a 426 and go all the way and spend about $2000 but would a 440 be on in the trails?

why wouldnt a 440 be good on trails? all big bores give monstrous troque..and on trails isnt that what u want? But my motor has costed me about 1000..maybe a little more...but u'll definatly need more than 500$ to go 440

well which would be better on the trails a 426 or a 440 and i might be doing a lil racing...what are the differences in the two?

This is what I put on my 440 kit - HERE (http://www.on-dunes.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=33) - Dont forget to check out all the related parts at the bottom of the page.

440 kit - $200
Install it - depends on who you get. I can get it installed around here for around 50$

total - ??

Still got money left over for a cam/etc. Also need to look into getting a pipe.

I would'nt go that high in compression, because you will need other stuff to keep your motor running good, but its up to you.

For $500 you are going to want to stick with a 416 or 426. You dont have to have the cases split, and you can just have your stock sleeve bored out rather than getting a new sleeve. I would also put a hotcam or some other drop in cam, but thats about all you get for $500. If you want porting to the heads, then add another $250. Is your engine still running ok, or is it in need or a rebuild?

It runs fine, I just want more power. What about having the cases split for the 440?

To allow for the new sleeve to be pressed in or whatever you have to do for the 440 big bore you have to split the cases($50-$75), and then pay someone to install the sleeve. It is also recommended to run an aftermarket oil cooler. The big bores produce more heat so they need the extra cooling. I would stronly suggest a 416 for you.

How bout this- 416, hmf exaust with proper jetting, K&N with outerwears & no lid, xr 400 cam, hardened rockers, & crf 450 cam chain?

Well thats a good combo, but what type of riding do you do, the XR400 is a good wood/trail cam, good power down low, gain some in the mid and little on the top. Their is no need to do hardened rockers on a xr400(-$200). If you want good mid to top power with a little sacrifice down low go with a hotcam stage 2($140 or around there). HMF and sparks are both great, my sparks was louder no doubt had a little better power in the mid to top. If you do the xr400 cam than I would get the HMF and have the heads port and polished($200-250).

Just to add some info. Both my buddies have 416 with 11:1 JE, stage 2 hotcam, sparks X-6, port and polish, Sparks Rev limiter, one has a FCR39MM and they both can take a piped raptor in the 100 yard sand drags(Straight up thats the way it is). For trail riding with their stage 2 cams a raptor might do better, but a xr400 cam would take care of that.

I do hard trail riding and I plan on going mx next season. Thanks for the info.

I don't see any disadvantage from a trail riding perspective in going to a 440 kit. Torque will be increased, expecially with a higher compression piston. Increase your torque, and take advantage of it with a CDI that has the advance at the low end of the RPM range (for trails) and you end up with a torque monster that requires a lot less shifting and more low end trackable power.

If you just do basic trail riding and are going to do MX tracks. A 416 is easier to get done(you need less knowledge). You could get the stage 2 hotcam, port and polish the heads, 11:1 JE piston, bore the cylinder, new gaskets for around $700-800. Then you could always get a CDI that has the advance in the low end of the curve to keep the bottomend.(The cam will have more effect on top end than the bore size)
