Well I haven't been on the site for a few months, so I feel a little lost, but I just wanted to run something by you guys (and gals).

With the release of the new 450's, the prices of all the other sport quads are dropping. 400's are going for $3000, and newer 300's are about that same price. This forces me to wonder if I should even attempt to do my annual winter project quad. Three years ago I rebuilt an '89 250x. I bought it for $500 and put $1000 into it. I sold it for $2500 to the first guy that looked at it. Now I have to wonder if doing something like this would be nothing more than a waste of money and time. With prices so low, anyone who could have only afforded a 250x or Warrior a year ago can now probably get a 300ex or even a 400ex with the same amount of money. The problem is, its diffult to find beat-up 400's, because they are all relatively new. Thus, I can't find a project quad that I will be able to sell for any decent amount of money. So I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to do a project or not. Any ideas or comments?

You can go buy a brand new quad of whatever brand you want. Put lots of money into it and you'll never make a profit..:(

Honestly, I think it's amazing that you've made any money at all.

Yes, I think it's going to be even more difficult now. You're not likely to sell a 250X for more than $1500. I don't think anybody is willing to buy a 250x or 300ex for $2500, because they can find a 400EX for $2800

I run ads in my local paper every now and then saying I buy used ATV's/ATC's. Just buy wisely and you can turn some money.

I don't think that you will be able to make the same profit as you used to be able to but There will still be someone to buy an old machine

its more of a joy of rebuilding something than making a profit. im rebuilding a 56 chevy truck with my friend frame up. we are putting tons of cash in it, but we will never see it again if we decide to sell it. but i do it just for the fact that i like doing it.

I wish their was $ in building a project quad! I'm lucky to get parts cost out of it. Labor is lost usually. I do it for fun and to keep me occupied, all that idle mind stuff...

I'm glad to see new sport quads coming out by all manufactures, but it really has killed the resale value of my old trusty 250X. I sank about 6 grand into mine about a year before the 400EX came out.:grr: Now the bad *** 450R is coming out so I figure my old X in worth about 50 bucks. I think I'll hold on to it for my 2 year old to ride in about 10 years and daddy can get a new shiny 450R:D .

I know a couple people that buy quads from over on the east coast and sell them here on the west. They make about $1k or more per bike, thats counting shipping costs and all. Recently he got a clean stock R for 1500 and turned it around for over 3k.
