In august I bought my 2001 400ex and well the problem is that it doesnt start in gear with the clutch pulled in. Does anyone know how to fix this?

It was also raced could the guy I bought it from maybe have put some sort of block off on it?

Check the switch in your clutch lever. There are two wires that lead to that switch. This is the most probrable cause. If the switch is faulty, you can bypass it by connecting the two wires together. You can also see if the switch is at fault by connecting the two wires. If it starts, its the switch, if it doesn't, its somewhere else down the line.

I forgot to mention it is a RTC clucth lever.

Has it always been this way? If so look for two wires(near your clutch lever and not connected to anything) and connect them together. Just make sure your always pulling in your clutch when starting your bike.

There are 2 wires that go into a box that sits in the stock clutch perch. If that box isnt there or arent connected together you need to solder them together. Or put it together with but connectors if you just want to get it working.

Sometimes the same problem is caused by hooking up a kill switch to those wires that go into the stock killswitch also. (At least thats what caused it on my buddies bike).

whys that? Not on all 400's, just the ones that have there clutch switch wired together. Because on these bikes the bike will even try to start in gear(if you have connected the two wires). So if the bike isn't in neutral and you don't pull in the clutch, the bike will jump forward when you try to start it because the safety switch is no longer there to protect you. Was I a little clearer this time?

I do the same thing sometimes, but it helps to read the whole thread. I don't think he has his switch any more.

Shes a little dirty but here are pictures of my clutch and I have no idea what the two wires on my clutch are supposed to be?

Does it have to do with these two wires how would I connect those?

yes, if you are talking about the two wires that have the rubber boots on the end of them, what i did was pull the rubber boots off and got some electrical tape and taped em together.

sweet! thanks for all the help everyone.

Are sure electrical tape will work? Is there a more permanent way?

yes electrical tape works, and you could solder the wires together, but if you dont have anyting to solder with, then electrical tape is fine, just wrap it up really good

It would work but the best way is to sauder it together and tape it good. If you use butt connectors the seem to get moisture in them and the wires turn green and then you might have the same problem again.

yes you were more clear that time...I didnt know if it was like super bad for the cluthc or something?

With those two wires together it will start in gear or neutral. It doesnt matter as long as you have the clutch pulled in.
