i was just wondering what the symptoms were of a bad clutch basket. when i take off, my 400ex seems to be shaking alittle bit. i wouldn't think my clutch would be bad because i am using a sparks clutch and i am not that hard on it. who knows, it may just be my top end gearing.

They are usually bad when you get grooves in the petals of the basket where the plates touch. That will cause them to catch and hang up when engaging and disengaging the clutch. I have never heard of one going out of balance or anything. Is it your tires possib;y, maybe colder weather having an effect?

i think it may have been from my high gearing. i love top speed so i was running 16/36 on my 406. yeah, i also have aftermarket tires. i guess i never noticed it before because i am always on hard ground and the other day i was in trails and muddy terrain.

You are geared wayyyy to high--I run that gearing on my Built 440 with 18" slicks. With 20 or 22" tires you are killing the motor! Drop back with 38 rear or leave the 36 and go back with 15 front; your acceleration through the gears will cut in half.

I tried the 16/36 gearing once at the dunes and hated it I did not have enough bottom. I run 16/37 and seems to work good for me.

16/38 is my setup. the 15 tooth was bouncin off the rev limiter way too easily.

you are geared a little high for your motor. imo

yeah, i know i was geared a bit high. i put the stock ignition box back on for winter and i nail that rev limiter through the gears. i put the stock 38 on and when i get a chance i will see if i hit the rev limiter worse. with my cam and pipe, you just need to be at the upper rpm range for the all out power. in the drag races actually, the high gearing didn't hurt me. i run the same against my friends built ex whether i run 16/38 or 16/36. however, if we get in trails or in tight terrain, its a different story.
