OK I have a 84 or so XR 500R motor that I want to put in a quad frame. First question I have is does anyone know what kind of power these bikes have, I rode it when it was still on the dirt bike frame but it was so whipped that you couldnt get past second gear in a short straight cuz the RPMs just droped and it leaks oil out of everywhere and smokes worse than a wet leaf fire. Also what would be the best and easiest frame to put it in. I was thinking 300EX, or 400EX but a 400EX roller is pretty expensive. Any ideas will help.

I have rode one of these bikes a long time ago. It had pretty good power but it was geared down a couple of teeth so it was a wheelie machine. It had tons of low end but not much up top. My opinion if you are wanting to stick a bike motor in a quad, go with a XR600 motor because it would be a lot easier to get parts for with that motor and I have seen it done. I actually saw it in a Dirtwheels issue. Can't remember if they used a 300ex or 400ex frame. I would probably go with the 400ex frame. Good luck . Tom

I already have the XR 500 motor I got it dirt cheap and thats the only reason I want to put it in a quad frame.

They used a custom LAEGER'S frame.

well if you wanted to part with that motor perhaps we could reach an agreement ;)

No, It wasn't a Laeger's frame. I'm almost positive I remember it being a 300ex frame . I will find the issue but I know it wasn't an aftermarket frame. It was in the Letters section about 5 months ago.

Im pretty sure the frame was round tubing. And the 300ex has square tubing.

Yep, just read it out of my dirtwheels, (It combined the engine from a Honda XR600 dirt bike engine with one of laegers custom made frames).:bandit:

Its a custom leagers frame with 300EX parts and a XR 600 motor, they revamped it a few issues back with new wheels, tires, plastic, graphics and a fresh powder coating. Its basically a leagers 300EX frame but im sure its built around 250R geometry like any other aftermarket frame, it just is made to except the 300s plastics and such. So technically you are both right.

Call service honda and talk to the guys in the shop. I talked to them a while back about a xr 600 motor in a 400 ex frame. It sounded like they were thinking about building one.

I had a 85 xr 500 bike. She ran real good untill it started to smoke allot. :D
