Hi,
I am new to this forum and 400exs, but I have been looking at them because I am about to buy a quad. I have heard that they can lose power once the engine heats up, since they are aircooled. How much power do they lose, and does it really effect anything? Also, if it does, is there anyway to fix it? Sorry if this is a dumb questiong, but hey I am new! Thanks:D

On a stock motor with just bolt on mods, it's really not that big of a deal unless you are really hammering it in first and second all day in the woods. You can buy a set of scoops that will help for like 40 bucks. If you start modding the motor there are other things you can do like bigger oil tanks and aftermarket oil coolers.

Thanks, so it would be okay for desert riding with just a pipe?

its not a dumb question if u are still learning about 400ex's etc. they do lose hp if they get over heated, not as soon as they heat up.

yeah scopes help alot, with my scoops i dont have any problems boggin around in 1st and 2nd in the woods. It take alot to get them hot enough to loose power it it becomes a problem get scoops and grab a oil tank with wholes threw it, possibly a bigger oilcooler or run dual stockers.

Also run 20w50 oil when its hot and when it gets cooler in the winter as long as it stays about 20 or so when you riding use 10w40

since i dont ride when its cold i do matnece i run 20w50 all the time, regualr castrol gtx and it has worked fine for me from 130 at the dunes to low 40 degree nights arround here

If you are going to do desert racing go with the Z400. (I have 400ex and would love to have liquid cooled now)

Well, I am not really going to be desert racing, but more likly desert riding. Does the 400ex do bad in the desert, becasue of the heat? Would the 20w50 oil help a lot? Thanks agian.

Nah the 400ex doesnt do bad in the heat, but if you are buying a new quad might as well get a Z400. I beat my 400ex for a year straight, ran it in 100+ weather and it still ran good, I just tore it apart to bore it. You can pick up used 400's for cheap

20W-50 is pretty thick. I would use 10W-40.

The 20W50 works great in the summer months. I run 10W40 in the winter for better start up protection:)

First of all YES get air scoops make ur quad run cooler AND makes it look cooler

Also why run first gear ull be so far behind other riders if u pin it in first which is NOT fast at all... try second or 3rd thoughs are better gears :)

well when ever we go riding we usually pic less travel trails and they are alot more worn and we just go slower and look around for hills but when we get on the main trails i let it all out :blah:

I am most likely buying used unless I can get a super deal on a new. Does anyone have any links for the air scoops? thanks for the replies.
