overall, i prefer the stage 2 because i like all the mid to top speed i can get. if your more interested in riding trails, the stage 1 might suit you better.
I have the stage 2, and I love it.

It has alot to do with riding conditions but I do prefer the stage II for most bikes

Is it true that with HotCams you don't need to replace the valve springs or harded the rocker arms? I just got another 400EX (1999) that has VERY low hrs on it (a Lawyer buddy of mine bought it new in 99 and rode it 4 times). I want to make the a 416 or 426 with a Hotcams Stage 2 (C&D, thanks for quoting some of that work via PM). So again, will I need to do springs or harden the rocker arms. This is strickly a agressive woods machine (with coal hills climbs) not a racer. I even plan on sticking with the stock rev limiter (heard horror stories of aftermarket rev limiters being just a 250r one that make it hard to start) so, little risk of floating the valves. C+D, or anyone, help... Thanks!

stock springs and rockers on 200 hours of a stage 2 416
you will need springs if you get the rev box
if you ride hill climbs and open trails get a stage 2.
tight woods get a stage 1
