I got a 440 kit from colby not too long ago, and I was wondering if I should get some heavy duty head studs. I'll have a 11:1 compression ratio.

honestly it's hit and miss. My buddy on here...Big D Racing, runs a 440 w/ 12.5 to 1 and has OEM studs.:huh

I have a 416 and solely for peace of mind, I went with the FDO Racing studs.

I have been running a 463 with 13-1 compresion and havn't had any problems with the head studs. but i did have a 426 with 11-1 and did pull a head stud a couple years ago. So it's not needed but if you have the extra money it is not a bad idea!

Bigger head studs does not solve the problem. What they do when putting bigger studs in is replace the alum. threads in the cylinder (the real problem) With steel inserts, helocoil(sp?)

I took the studs out of mine and put steel inserts in them. No problems yet.

I havent had any problem with the stock headstuds yet ( 2 years on my 11:1 440). But i think ill get some on my next motor since ill be running 13:1.

Hey Bill, this is Alin in San Diego. I'm sure you remember me.. Anyhow, things look to be good on this end when I broke it in at Glamis last weekend.

BTW...for anyone looking at getting these, the biggest physical difference is the very coarse threads in the FDO studs, not fine threads like OEM Honda, the grab and hold tight. No probs so far...

^^ The post for anyone looking.

Say I did buy the studs and install them myself. How does FDO install them? (so I can do them the same way)

Fine threads are stronger than coarse threads.

we use a thread forming tap instaed of a cutting tap.it make the new threads in ur cylinder stronger that way.to install them yourself all you need to do is dril and tap your cylinder to the right size of the bottem threads on the new studs.hey alin i'm gald everything is fixed and holding strong for you.sorry for the mix up and if u have any problems or need anything you know our number. thanks BILL
