i am thinking about going one inch smaller on the front tires of my 400ex. i put on the factory size, but one inch wider in the front and rear. they are shredders. i definately lost some 4th and 5th gear pull. i think i want to do some weight saving and go back to the factory width and one inch smaller. just looking for suggestions if anyone has tried this. will it still handle ok?

You will notce quicker steering with the smaller tire and a little less roll in.I have run smaller fronts with success.

So what's the advantage of a 22in tire over a 21?

Strictly more ground clearance. I run 19" Holeshots in front and they rock. The steering is so much more nimble and responsive over larger tires. You might want to try 20" if you do trail riding. This will still give you a reasonable amount of clearance. :)

YEP I run 19" grooved radials for racing but have my stockers for the trails I like the way the 19's steer alot better than the others!! Plus of course it lowers the front some.:)

Rolls over ruts, logs, or other obstacles easier.

the 22" tire will soak up more bumps and rocks and stuff, theres more tire between the rim and the ground so you can run a slightly lower PSI and it will give you a smoother ride

stock 400ex tires are 22" front and 20" rear

for mx I will always run a 20" front tire, my friend had 19" mx's and after he rode my 20" front he realized how much more the 20" can soak up...i'm not worried about height that much, I can just lower my ride height on the suspension

for trail riding a 21/20" setup I like the most but if you have some really hardcore trails or if you are hanging up on rocks and stuff stick with the 22s

Easier as in less noticable if that makes any sence.............had 21's and 22's, and with 21's the machine seems to buck around more when hitting 4-6" rocks than with the 22's on.
For some reason, I heard of MX riders swapping from the 19" fronts to the new 20" fronts and liking it better. Not sure of why though.

for a little more sidewall for ground clearance and a little more bounce on the landings cause a bigger sidewall will give more

I was doing this until I realized I could pop my mx 2ply tires in a matter of seconds :eek2:

With MX fronts, 19" and 20" are quite similar in handling. There are tradeoffs with both though.
19": More precise steering
Slightly less rolling resistance
Lower ride height (can be good or bad)
20": Smoother ride
Can work better in the loose stuff
And also, more brand options

I like both of them, and don't let the difference between the two bother me that much. They both have their good points.
