I think the 87-89 had J-Arms, but A-Arms will bolt up in place of them.

I believe they went to A-arms in 90. They aren't hard to adapt. A lot of drag racers opt for j-arms since they are lighter.

87'-90' were J arms.
Check out www.atvfourplay.com
Theres a couple of pics of some heavy duty J arms.

There was a company making adapters you can weld to the frame to make them into A arms.
There are pro's and cons to both.
What kind of riding are you doing?

i had j arms on mine (yes the 89's have them) and i bought a kit from a guy on www.bansheehq.com that i welded to the frame. it works great and is made of like 1/8" thick metal so it strengthens the hell outta the front end. i got it for like 125$ but they are like 225$ on ebay

They aren't quite as strong, thats why they changed to a-arms.

Another dis advantage of the J arm is there is no caster adjustment. It may not be an issue to you but to some it is.
As far as strength and durability an aftermarket J arm when constructed properly, is durable.
As asked before, it all depends on what kind of environment your going to ride in and how your going to ride. Trails/dunes /drags/recreation etc you'll be fine. MX/TT A arms for sure.

I got screwed out of the deal on the Shee as usual, but I'll still get one. (hopefully) I think they would be fine for me though, I just do trail riding and ocaasional MX (just playing around not real racing).
