I finally sold my 2000 400ex the other day, I was deffinately a sad day to see it go but I got me a new project for this winter.
With the money from the 400 i bought a Camaro. Its a 1988 Iroc Z28 with a 305 5-speed,red, t-tops. I just got done putting a flowmaster muffler on it tonight (duals) and it sounds pretty good  I am gonna give it a paint job this winter along with a new headliner but other than that it really needs nothing. I might post some pics if i can get a camera. Its a really fun car to drive got pretty good power but its deffinately nothing like a 350.

Better check your vin & make sure some clown didnt just put on some stickers.

they might rattle, but let me tell you, they did not handle like crap...

I had a 88 Firebird Formula 350 (350TPI w/ WS6 pkg). It would tear my buddy's mustang's up. One had a 88 and another was a 95..... they both agreed my Firebird was much faster and handled better.

I can tell you read a lot of car and driver don't you.

IROC's came with 305's. In 85 when the IROC was introduced the Camaros didn't even have a 350 option (which I'm pretty sure would limit the IROC from having a 350 ;) )

Theres 9 second 305's out there but they aren't the greatest motor on the planet, this guy seems happy with hes so why make comments like "305's suck"? Makes you sound like a jack ***. F-bodies SOMETIMES have rattles, only F-bodies that leak are the ones that need things replaced from being worn out like any other car, I'll put my good hard earned money that my F-body will out handle anything you own and if that is a true IROC I'll also put my money it will out handle anything you own.

Congrats on the purchase dude F-bodies are addicting and fun. I bought my first one 3 years ago, Pristine 85 IROC thing was awsome but I soon grew out of the 305tpi. Next one was an 02 ws6 t/a and it's been modded and puts down just over 400 hp to the wheels.

Good luck and have fun

A buddy of mine had a 89 formula years ago. It was a pretty nice car. It had t tops and the handling package. That car would round a corner like nobodies business.

The only thing that car needed was to rip out the 305 and stuff and 383 stroker in it.

Enjoy your new ride, man!! Let us know how many speeding tickets ya get.;)

Here's a picture of the exact car I had years ago...I really miss it... this car was NOT the average F-body for its time.

you could get a 350 in the iroc but only with an automatic tranny. my old man bought one in 86 (i think) and it was a fun car to drive. the 305 wasnt a powerhouse but the 5 speed made it feel faster then it was. he loved that car till i smoked him with my 5.0:devil:

I have a 85 Iroc. It has a 305 in it also. The best thing about this car is it has only 14432 miles on it. They only work it had done to it was new intake runners with a hollowed out cat with a flowmaster exhaust. Also it has a set of SLP's exhaust headers. I was talking with a engine builder I know, he was saying that a 350 is the same as a 305, except for the storke and they bore it out to make it a 350. The block is the same and so are the heads, the only thing that makes it different is the bore and stroke.

I had an '86 Z-28 that I wish I still had. I personally think the F bodies are good looking cars, especially the IROCs. My Z had a carbureted 305, but it still ran great and had enough power to have fun with. With all the money you saved buying that instead of a new car, you could build a strong 350 or 383, do some basic suspension upgrades, and put the smack down on most cars driving around right now. If it rattles and squeeks, adjust the rubber hatch bumpers and install a new set of door hinge bushings-- problem solved.
PS-- spend the extra cash on a good quality set of hood and hatch lifts, unless you like getting hit in the head a lot.;)

Buddy of mine just bought a 85 Iroc this summer with 39,000 miles on it. Doesnt run to bad for a 305 ran a 14.9 and is pretty much stock. Only mods are k&n filters flowmaster exhaust and a fiberglass ss hood.

Sorry to ruffle so many feathers, but 305's do suck (sorry)
Its really just the 305 heads that suck

Who wanted to know what I drive??

& Ill take on any F-body handling wise in my 90 GT w/eibachs & 50's

& I'm not just a blue oval guy
Ill take on just about anything in my 69 vette conv 427/390 4spd
Curvy or straight.

& if you really wanna be embarrased run me in my 50 chevy pickup 5 window 400 short block turbo 400 trans & a fat *** Qjet.

Lot's of surprised looks when those old whitewalls & Buick wire hubcaps smoke 3rd in their faces.

Its not real good in the turns tho still got the old solid front.

And no I don't read a lot of car & driver
Tech & assembly manuals are more my speed.

But anyway sorry for dissing your ride.
No harm meant.

But it's a proven fact that in similar trim, mods whatever, you gotta have a 350 in a camaro to run with a 302 in a stang.

The differences in the IROC 305 and 350 engines are bore size, valve size, and throttle body size. The PROM is also different for the engines.

Anyone who calls a 305 junk but thinks a 350 is tits is a MORON. They are almost identical.

I had a 1985 IROC with 305 that ran 14.60's with just a hollowed-out cat and a Hypertech chip. For the 86 and newer cars, you can get a larger diameter throttle body that helps considerably. You can also get a "TPI" cam that will psych your motor into making more power without pissing the electronic engine controls off too bad.

And as far as the F-bodies being slow...... my 1984 Z-28 with a 5-speed 305H (non-h.o.) would run about even with a mustang 5.0GT. The Mustangs would beat my 1985 IROC 305 auto out of the hole, but I'd smoke them about the time they had to shift!

Red00Honda400EX

Heres the specs on the 88 TBI 305 , the 88 305TPI and the 88 350TPI:

LO3 V8 9.3:1 5.0 (305) 170@4000 255@2400 TBI
LB9 V8 9.3:1 5.0 (305) 220@4400 290@3200 TPI
L98 V8 9.3:1 5.7 (350) 230@4400 330@3200 TPI

as you can see the 350 isn't a big jump over the 305. Now theres a huge difference between the TBI motor and the TPI motor. lol. Still better than GM's awsome Cross fire injection. :D

Ok thanks for the comments for those of you that made nice ones.

Red00Honda400EX- thanks for the comments :D

ewalker- in my post anywhere did i say anything about it being fast? NO i didnt. I agree its not a super fast car or anything but put a 17 year old in a really fast car you get trouble. At least with this it will be a little easier to stay out of trouble. Plus the reason i got the 305 over a 350 is so i could have a 5 speed tranny. Its very hard to find an iroc with a 350 5 speed. With the 5 speed it will still put you back in your seat. And it does handle very good.

And to those of you that think irocs are ugly thats your opinion but the f bodies especially with the iroc package look a lot better than the mustangs of that time.

muff said it best-maybe he only had the X grand from his ex and didn't have the money to spend on a giant 500 horse monster

Hes right i didnt have a ton of money from the ex to spend on a car so i bought what i could afford and i am gonna have fun with it.

Fast & Furious---Did I say anywhere that your ride was slow???

NO! Just that 305's suck.

I already apologized once for dissing your ride jeeez.

Good luck with it already.

But if you see anything that looks remotley like this in your rear view, go ahead & just pull over, or you may be shopping for a new set of doors.
