What filter does everybody prefer? I've heard the UNI will breathe a little better once it gets dirty. I've used both and I sure like not having to fool with that sticky oil when I use the K&N. Does anybody have any trick ways of oiling the UNI without getting the sticky oil all over everything? Thanks for any info.

Where I ride, I prefer the UNI... I think if you ride in the sand, as in, less dusty conditions, the K&N may be a better choice. The way I oil all of my foam filters is in a large freezer zip lock bag. Put the filter in, with a little oil on the inside and pour some oil into the bag and work it in. It takes awhile. The last time, I just used my hands and had some hand cleaner close by. I was kind of short on time and wanted to get it done! :)

Another vote for Uni... IMO it filters better and performs just as good.

Uni Hands down,I'm sure somebody's gonna say K&n with outterwear but whats the point of a k&n if you gotta prefilter it seems like its pointless to pay more money for more work and IF there's any performance diffrence it'll be almost impossible to feel.

K&N. Prefilter? I don't need no stinkin' prefilter. :)

you ever held a K&N up to the light... you can see through it. i know it has to let fine particles of dirt in... that's ok, the motor builder likes them...more work for him......oh yeah, i vote UNI.

I have run K&N in all my quads and am very happy with them. There is just something nice about not screwing with all that foam and oil schiz. I know lots of dudes that use UNI's and like them also. To each their own, but K&N is performance and simplicity in one for me!:D

Uni all the way just dont overoil it like I did. I had to dump out the tube on my airbox like 4 times after the oil drained. Just put a little on & wring it.

How could a K&N be easier maintinence????????

K&N
1. Spray on cleaner
2. Wash filter with water
3. Air dry filter (takes a while)
4. Oil
(30-45 minutes at least)

UNI
1. Pour on Kerosene or gas
2. Wring out
3. let dry for like a minute
4. Oil
(5-6 minutes)

I would not use GAS as a cleaner with filters... over time it will destroy the foam and rubber. I've seen it happen first hand with my old quad...

ok but how does the stock filter compare to uni? I heard the stock filter was a good filter on the 400.

Well I would

It hasn't hurt the 5 yr old UNI on my 250SX after about 40-50 cleanings.

Its dry in like 30 seconds anyway.

Dont soak it, just wet it & wring it out. & oil

Only way gas is gonna hurt ya filter is if you don't oil it.

Kerosene is just recomended b/c it's got a higher flash point.

In reality the stock filter is as good as any aftermarket filter until you get deep into the engine & can do something with more flow......like a whole lot of other stuff, it's just another excuse to buy a new toy for the quad.

Using gas to clean filters is stupid. It breaks down the glue that holds the filter together, which in turn allows more dirt particles through. The correct way is to use kerosene first - saturate the filter then squeeze it out, don't wring it. This breaks down all the oil oil. Then wash it in a bucket of soapy water, again squeezing it. Finally, rinse it off with the hose and let it dry completely before oiling. I use this techniquie on my foam Twin Air in my bike and on my K&N.

K&Ns are made out of medical quality gauze.

I can tell you that my cousin's 400EX with a K&N, a prefilter and no lid does not like a lot of water. If we rode in heavy puddles and that filter got soaked it acted just like it was running way too rich.

No you are stupid if you think that gas will break down the filter. I KNOW from experience that it won't.

If you don't agree, fine use your "technique" & I'll do it the way I always have.

All I know is I got a 17 year old 250 & I always cleaned the foam filter with gas & it still runs like a top.

What's with the sudden change, previously everybody was like K&N is THE way to go, and now it's UNI?

Well its personal taste I guess, some swear by the use of K&N, others hate it.
Both should work well when properly taken care of.

im sayin UNI agian becouse the K&N flows TOOOOOOO much. the K&N is great for cars and trucks and stuff like that but i would rather have a foam filter on a quad!!

I ride in sand & dirt, so I use a K&N for sand & when I ride in dirt I put a UNI Foam filter cover on my K&N. Works great.

Sand gets pulles threw a UNI filter. Best for Dirt
Dust gets pulled thew the K&N. Best for Sand

Now I have the best of both worlds

Once I bought my 400ex in 1999, I used a K&N air filter with a prefilter. I always left the airbox lid on. After 3 years, I had a fellow rider/engine builder put in the 416 kit. He was surprised to see after 3 years, there were no signs of sand/dirt penetration in the engine.

I have always been anal about making sure I had a clean filter for every ride/race. I have done my share of river crossings, dusty & muddy riding conditions to the point that I needed to drain the air box plug periodically during a ride.

In short, K&N is a noticeable difference over the stock filter. I do not know if it is better than a UNI, but I have "heard" that K&N passes more air through than a UNI, and that it may allow more dirt particles through than a UNI.

Unless there is something I am missing, I will continue to run K&N in both machines. :macho

I run a K&N. I did a bit of research on the subject a few years ago. It seemed to me that the K&N flows a little better, but it will also let in some of the very fine particles.

The UNI will filter a little better, but flows a little less.

So, it depends on where your priorities are. Do you want maximum performance, or maximum longevity and reliability?

You just summed it up right there. Alot of people swear by their K&N saying it holds dirt fine, etc... After trail riding and being in extreme conditions especially over a weekend of riding te K&N will be filthy, where the outside of the uni might me a little, but the K&N outerwear would get filled then it breathes like crap, I know cause my brother has one, Im going to order a Uni for mine in most conditions and if I run it in the sand I will use an outerwear or get a K&N for that.

My buddy had a stock400 like new and put a Uni on with no airbox and got that direct hookup to the carb adapter, after ride in the sand it sucked it into his engine and like 3 rides later it was time for a rebuild. He was looking to get a 416 and needed a good excuse to do so, dumb excuse if you ask me, just a piston, stage 2 and other mods would do as good as the 416 with less mods, could put it towards a FCR39MM
