Its mostly cosmetic. It will prevent corrosion, but mostly it is for looks. And it does nothing for the strength if the frame.

Yeah he wants to get so (and I quote), "so I can be confident to say I have the trickest Dale ever made".

LOL

Powdercoating will make the frame lose tensile strength.

it wouldnt rust because the cannondale frames are aluminum

i made a few calls and inquired on doing a dale frame. the biggest obstacle with the anodizing was that the dale uses steel inserts in the bolts holes. a few people told me that this is a huge issue and they wouldnt preform the process on the frame.

im sure it can be done...but finding a company that can handle it and do it correctly maybe the biggest problem

I'm not so sure about that, I dont think 20 minutes at 400F is going to change the strength of the frame any. And I dont think "tensile" strength cones into play on an ATV frame. Maybe you mean "shear" strength.

I have had a lot of parts on my car anodized and I remember them telling me that steel would react bad to whatever it is they do during the process. I had to be sure to remove all steel before shipping the parts to them.

the reason the aluminum cannondale frames are as strong as they are is because they are heat treated...pappys not talking about your average steel frame, the heat of the oven could possibly mess with the tensile strength of the alum. frame

Yep. My friend worked at Cannondale for a year as a test rider, so he probly knows more about Dales than anyone here. He can take a dale apart about as fast as I can take my R apart.

The question about powder coating an atv frame, made of heat treated aluminum, was asked on a Powder Coating forum. This is the reply that we got from a coating specialist of many years.

"nahhhhhhh. Just go for the lower temp/longer cure cycle and you'll be fine. Should be doing that on anything aluminum anyways. Remember to blast and degrease very well and leave the rest up to the mystical powder gods (aka: no, you shouldn't have any major issues with it) "

p.s.- lower temp to prevent outgassing from welds as well"
So can a Dale frame be powder coated? YES!
