i'm lookin at buying an f250 extended cab. the thing is i don't have much to spend on it so it will be kinda an older model. what should i look for in buying one used and what years are the best used???

'95 or newer powerstrokes are the best diesels. In '99 I believed they changed the tranny a little, not positive, but they definitely quieted them down a little. I have a '99 extended cab with 120k miles and I love it.

If you're looking for something a little older go for a 95, 96 or 97 Stroker. The 93 ford diesel's weren't turbo, and some of the 94's weren't. The 94 model also isn't called a Powerstroke, but it's pretty much the same since it is turbo. My youngest brother has a 93, and my father has a brand new 6.0 powerstroke, and the difference between the two is amazing. You'll like the Powerstroke.

The 94's had a turbo but it did not have the direct injection, it was basically the original 7.3 with an aftermarket turbo added. 95 was the first year for the Power Stroke with the direct injection and there were a couple issues with it. 96 or newer is going to be your best bet.

04 powerstrokes are more powerful that the others at least if I remember right they were going to change them for next year. The Dmax is quieter and more powerful than the powerstrokes of before. The next dmax thats supposed to come out like next year is even more powerful. If I remember right in 05 it will have 340hp and 600lb/ft.

I have a 2000 F250 extended cab Powerstroke with 135,000 miles and I love it! Tows my big trailer great!

You will probably want to carry a spare Cam Position Sensor because those go bad occasionally and cause erratic engine problems, but they are easy to install. On some of the older models there is a connector under the valve cover that shorts out and can cause some probs as well.

Have the oil changed by a someone who knows diesels so they get the right stuff in there.

Strong engine overall, it's not uncommon to get 300k to half a million miles out of them without a rebuild. The chassis is good to, you don't have the front end problems that are common with the Dodges.

Cummins or Powerstroke is the only way to go. Cummins dont have much power stock but with not much $ at all you can turn them way up!! Auto trannys with diesels dont last too long either because of the torque, so keep that in mind.

well i wouldn't mind the manual but i don't think i will get one cause i know it will be fine for a little while but then it will grow old. whats wrong with the pre 95 ford diesels besides it not being a powerstroke?? i have a friend with an 84, which i know it way to old for me to consider, but it has a turbo and it seems to run real good. i'm thinking the oldest i might go is a '90 would that be to old???? thanks for all the help.

The direct injection setup that the Power Stroke has makes a night and day difference compared to an older 7.3 (or even older 6.9) with an aftermarket turbo. The older ones with a turbo have a pretty horrible "turbo lag" that the newer ones don't.

Chevy owners are used to pushing their vehicles.

Is that a new brand?? LOL I know a guy with a 1990 diesel and while it doesn't have the power that the new ones have, it has over 200k miles on it and still running strong. They are pretty good engines and will do the job. My '99 is an automatic and I haven't had a problem yet (120k miles), however I admit I don't dare chip it or anything for fear it won't handle the added power.

I think the biggest cause of automatic transmission failures on the Ford is caused by towing in overdrive. The overdrive gear is not equiped to handle that much torque.

I love my cummings but there is no denying it, if you got the money you can make either one have more HP and torque then you could ever imagine, its just that to get the HP increased it costs a hole lot less in the cummings then in the powerstroke

Someone mentioned the new 6.0.
I drove a brand new 6.0 6 speed short ber regular cab the other day. it only had 75 miles on it when I was finished. My 2001 7.3 6 speed extended cab short bed has a lot more low end grunt. The 6.0 has more power after the turbo is spooled up but less below turbo. Also they are still having major problems with the 6.0

IMO the 7.3 Power Stroke is the way to go

I haven't driven the 6.0 or the 7.3 with a six speed. But I know that dad's 6.0 with the 5 speed auto has a lot of get up and go. I think more than a newer 7.3 with an auto. It's dad's first diesel since he got rid of his 93 7.3 in 1997. That 93 only had 18000 miles on it when he traded it in.
