Im about to buy a 99......and I coulda swore i heard people talking about problems with that year......and i was wondering if they do have problems or if I am imagining things......

I've got a '99 and a '00 and of the two the '99 is a lot better in every way (more power, frame built better, etc.). If I had the choice of buying any year 400EX again, I would look for a '99. You just need to look it over real good to make sure it hasn't been overly abused.

That sorta supports what I found when I did some research before I bought my 99. That 00 was actually a bad year. Something about the location of the production of the EX being moved to a different plant for 00 and they had some initial quality issues. I don't know if it's true, but I do know there is no need to avoid a 99...

Other than normal wear and tear, I have had no problems with mine at all.:)

HOnDo, I heard the same thing that the 99 models had problems, mainly with the tranny. I have yet to have any problems with mine(knock on wood).You DO have to look over used quads very carefully, some are rode hard and put up wet...so to speak.

All my friends had 400ex's at one point, a 99, 01, 02, not an 00' or 03 tho. But theirs never had any problems, except they would pass my 300ex in a drag:rolleyes:
