Hey, im looking for any info on the moddification of the stock silencer, such as..how to, any noticable power increase,(with appropriat jetting), and any increase in sound over stock baffleing.
I know i should be looking into a high flow aftermarket exhaust for my 440, however, i cant see spending a few hundred more on a machine i want to get rid of soon...:huh

Here is the link to the mods http://home.earthlink.net/~gellett/exhaust/index.htm

If you search this site for 'gabe exhaust' you will find a few threads on the topic. I plan on doing this mod just to try it one of these days myself.

So did you notice an increase in power? Is it louder?

I've seen those billet flanges on ebay before and I have been tempted to buy one, but I do some trail ridding and they don't come with spark arrestors. I would hate to start a fire.

I thought about buying one and building my own spark arrestor from metal door screen.

i ran without my baffle/spark arrester a very long time & never once did sparks shoot out?

If you're real concerned about noise, don't do the spark arrestor mod and limit the size of the hole in the rear chamber. When you open it up, you'll see that most of the restriction was in the front of the muffler. Grind out the welds on the headpipes too and you'll be pleased with the performance gain!

i had the modified stock pipe. i drilled 3 holes in the pipe as they showed in the directions. i also ran without the baffle. it did have a different tone than one with just the baffle out. i don't remember in the summer, but in the winter with a modded airbox lid i was running a 152 keihin mainjet. in the hottest days of summer, the stock mainjet might be the one. if not, a 150 should be plenty big until the cold days of winter. you will notice a slight increase in low to midrange power. the top end didn't seems much different though. by the way, i also had the welds grinded out of the headers.
