I use the Proxomitron - works very well & has lots of good config options.

I forget pop-ups even exist until I get on someone else's system.

Go on google and do a search you will find lots of good ones. Look for a pop up ad killer not stoper or blocker. Thats what someone told me when i had alot of pop up ad's with my old computer. I got my new computer and never get any pop up ad's like my old computer does. I don't know if the windows xp helps or what.

Careful, Google's toolbar = spyware -- although allegedly the spyware functions can be turned "off" by not using the pagerank or other "advanced" features.

Either way, do a little research into it if you use it.

I rarely ever get pop-up's. I've got Lavasoft's newest version of Ad-aware and I check the updates weekly. I run it about every 5-6 days and haven't had but one or two pop-up ads in months.

We use Panicware, but when I am logged on I have it turned off. Most of the time I don't venture off of this site any how. but if I do I turn it back on.

There are two sources of pop-ups.

1.) software you've installed on your machine - i.e. Gator. Many file sharing programs install spyware and adware on your system causing pop-ups, and release of data about your surfing habits, etc.

2.) Javascript on websites that launch pop up windows when you visit.

Number 2 is what usually annoys me - I am careful and don't have any software that causes number 1, but number 2 is irritating because you are exposed to this just by visiting legit websites who's owners feel they need pop-ups to support themselves (I find it hard to believe that Microsoft (MSN.com) would go bankrupt without revenue from pop-ups).

There are many ways to combat this.

Use a pop-up blocker - I use the Proxomitron because it's got all kinds of cool, powerful features for killing annoying javascript, frames, and other HTML controls. There are many good pop-up blockers out there.

Another good idea is to use software like zonealarm - this not only provides you with a decent firewall, it alerts you to programs that are trying to access the internet behind your back.

Yet more software exists like ad-aware that will help you find spyware, adware, etc.

I also run a small, older program called netmedic - it allows me to see incoming and outgoing network traffic & transfer speeds. To this extent there is also far more powerful software "sniffer" programs that allow you to see where the traffic is coming from and going to as well as port and protocol used.

I run Zone Alarm myself and it works very good... I also just started using the google toolbar, I'm pretty sure I have it setup NOT to send out info, but I may look into your suggestion gabe... Thanks.
