What causes a backfire and how can i fix it? I have a '96 300ex and it tends to backfire a lot when i let off the throttle. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Sounds like you might be running a little lean.
YOUr main jet is too small..

Or you have an exhaust leak.

I tore my exhaust apart after work and it had a hole about the size of a quarter in it where the muffler hooks onto the header pipe so i broke out the welding torches and patched it up!!!
Thanks for all of your advice. I was hoping i wouldn't have to mess with the jetting...... No more backfireing from my good ol' 300ex :)
