Well IM wondering if any of you have a prefered setup for building a 350 manly for street driving and mild off roading. Really i just want to have enough power to not have to down shift everytime i hit a small hill like i do now with my 305. Wondering if anyone could give me some advise on what to get?

I have built 2 350's.The first was was pretty hopped up.The second one was just basicly a bolt togother stock rebuild with a cam, flat top cast pistons,Stock rebuilt heads, headers, intake, carb.

The first motor I built had world products heads that where ported professionally,With big valves,A comp cams 270h cam,scat cast crank,scat 6.0 inch rods,Keith black pistons,(around 9.5:1 compression,)A peformer RPM intake,1406 edelbrock carb,Hedman 1 5/8 long tube headers,Dual 2.5 inch exhuast.With a 3:73 rearend and a 3 speed manual trans.In a 69 chevy long bed.I could break the tires loose at 55mph.That was shifting into 3rd gear.It wasn't just a bark either.

Desktop dyno says it made around 360hp and 410 foot pounds.

The other one was stock heads.(416 casting 305 heads)Replacement (.030 over)Pistons,A lunati bracket master cam with .458 lift,and a 218 degree's of duration @ .050 lift,on a 110 LSA,A torquer 2 intake,Holley 750 vacuam secondary carb,Hooker competition headers.

Desktop dyno says 285 hore/380 foot pounds.Using 416 casting heads fully ported with a 1.60 exhaust valve and a larger cam you can build nearly a 400hp 350.Of course they would need to be ported by a pro.

Either one of those motors would be enough power. The best part was I had less than 600 bucks into the second one I built. And it runs real hard.It is in an 86 camaro. It is going to be replaced by a 408 small block that I am building.(I am taking the heads off the 350 porting them and then getting steam holes drilled and putting them on this shortblock with a different intake though.Probably a victor JR.

If you have any question you can just PM me.I have built 4 small block chevy's so far.3 of them have run really good.I don't know how the 408 is going to run. There is no reason why it wont though.

Thow in some decent compression, 9.5:1 or so, pump gas friendly. Put on some vortec heads, an edelbrock vortec intake manifold, holley 650 truck avenger carb, RV cam, headers with fairly small primaries (more torque). That should get you there while keeping cheap.
Do you have to comply with DEQ emissions where you live?

they most important thing many ppl over look is balancing the bottom end.. ou race car engine revs so quick and sweet ..its defnately worth it

With the 350 SB, the sky is the limit as far as pistons, cams, heads...etc go. Just read up, talk with people that have a setup you like.

Good point, people have found 40+hp in small blocks just by balancing and blueprinting it. As long as you have the engine torn down you might as well (get it magnafluxed too to make sure it doesn't have any cracks).
The old V8's weren't made with the most precision equipment ;)

how much you think that would cost to get it balanced and blueprinted cause i think i found an engine not sure on year but a 355 3 bolt main just rebuilt but i want to do it again bore it out and do pistons rockers ect

Ps i found the engine for 100 it come along with the whole truck which was just in a collision and 1/2 a side of the truck was wied out but other than that still in running condition

Well it's either a 2 bolt or a 4 bolt main. Unless you are making over 400hp a 2 bolt should work fine.
If it's just been rebuilt I'd put the money into other things, you won't get much hp by boring like you do with quads.
I think it's about $300 for balancing and blueprinting.
Make sure it's a pre-'87 motor when they went to centerbolt heads and other garbage. the '60's motors are nice, before smog years.

you wont get 400... we have a balanced 350.. .steel crank. 040 over jE.eagle rods. 750 hooley. badass motown heads.big***** edelbrock intake w/ spaser..mallory ignition..dont know what grind comp cam not to big like a 2500-6000rpm cam..erson roller rocker.. milled heads w/ .018 thick head gaskets..so i dont know the CR probably 12:1
it may make 350-375

are you going solid or hdrolic lift cAM? i wish our car awas solid but for more practical every day driving you should go hydrolic
