I was told that every time you turn your pc on and off it has to reformat or reboot alot of stuff and its actually slows down your pc. I have mine on 24/7 except when Im not at home for a few days.

i dont think so. usually if you leave them on a long time they get slowed down. i turn mine off every night when i go to bed.

i turn mine off when i'm not using it because i don't trust people. :)

if it ain't on, it can't be hacked.

other than that, some OS seem to run better when left on(NT, all LINUX flavors, UNIX, Win2K, XP Pro), some don't(98SE, WinME, XP Home).

Mine stays on 24 hours a day, I just shut the monitor off anytime I'm away from the PC for more than a couple minutes.

my old gateway...i used to leave that on 24/7 for like almost a year straight....then it started acting realy slow..and i had to reset every other hour....so when i bought my dell...i turn it off every night so that doesnt happen.....ive only left it one for 4 days in a row..and that was to test the ram i just got..to see if it improved performance..wich it did..and its back to geting shut off every night...plus rippinitup7's computer crashed not to long ago..and he never turned his off either....

Maybe I'm lucky but my IBM PC 700MHz PIII running Windows 98 has been left on for 4 years now and it's never crashed. I've rebooted it from time to time but never turned it off. The only time in four years that it's been off is when we had that blackout for about 15 hours and when I moved into my house.

Mine is on all day, all night. I turn the screen off when I go to bed or when I'm not there (cuz I don't like ppls using my computer, and I my screensaver set on password mode..everywhere u go, there are passwords) But I have to restart it about 2-5 times a day  So that kinda sukz. But at night its on downloading music, while I'm at school its on downloading music, when I get home its usually just idoling (if I'm not on it), then later that evening I'm on it usually. But I think I needa get it reformatted here sometime...maybe, might be cuz all the music I have on here heh. Cuz its being really slow n junk (and all the restartings)

you shouldnt reall shut it off, when i turn my pc off i leave the monitor on it, it keeps moisture out, and from building up i shut mine off when im not on it

Leaving the pc on will not hurt it in anyway but you do need to restart on a fairly consistant basis.

i turn mine off every night....think of it as a quad...would you let your motor run 24/7 even when u dont need to use it? computers get hot and have parts that can break too, so its good to shut them down to let them rest.

ummmm no. you got it wrong. One of the worst things you can do to computer chips is heat cycling. When you turn your PC off, the chips cool down. Then you turn it on and they heat back up... BTW, please dont think of your computer as a quad motor. :huh

with that said, I leave ALL of my computer's on 24/7. At work with all of my networks, you'll never see PC's get powered off. The only thing that will get turned off are monitors, most of them just go into hibernation.

I shut our desktop down every night (it doesn't getused every day) but as for my laptop which I'm always on, it is always on standby(just close the ol' lid) the only time I restart is when I download the updates & it says to restart. I do turn it off when I'm gone for more than 2 days though.

mine stays on 24/7. but I like to restart it every couple of days just to keep things running smooth ;) oh and I like to open it up about once a month to blow the dust out.

I have a Dell that is going on about 7 years old. Only has a 2GB hard drive. Its only been off when the power has been out or for updates. Thats it. ON 24/7 with no problems. Except for running out of room for storage. Going to buy a new Dell next week. Hope the quality is still as good as they were back then.

ive heard it takes more power to turn it on and off daily then leave it on all the time. this may not be true but a teacher told me, who knows. but i just figure the less its on the less its being used the longer it will last. would you leave your quad running while you werent riding it?

Like I said, my PC is 4 years old and rarely gets turned off. My monitor lasted the entire time up until about 2 months ago and I bought a flat screen. I've still got the original monitor here at my house. It works but the sides lose focus after it's been on for more than 10 minutes or so. I tried degaussing but that didn't help.

my old gateway that had the whole 2gb harddrive...166mhz....I left it on and never turned it off. The only time it was off was when I got grounded. I tried to burn it out so we could get a new dell...which we got about a month ago. About a week after we got out dell, the 2 hard drives in the old gateway went out:devil:

When your computers run they use little to no power at all when it's running at night. I leave mine on all the time except when I go away for more than two days. The reason I leave mine on is because I had a older computer that I turned on and off. Well something happened to it so I brought it to a friend that repairs them, what happened was a couple of the resistors broke away from the board and a couple of the other circuits were loose. He said what happenes is that when the computer gets hot all the circuit boards expand, then when you turn it off the circuit boards cool off and contract. That's not good for electronics he said. So I just leave mine on all the time. Hope this helps.

James
