Hells yea man, this thing is gonna be sweet. It has taken me and a friend about 4 weeks so far to build it. Just about 45 minutes a day. He is cuttin all the metal and im weldin her all together. Really good experience, plus im gettin pretty good at weldin...best in 3 years or so says my shop teacher :D

Im guessin around 500+ for metal at least, i havent totaled it up yet. Also we are gonna need a shatloada plywood. At least 3-400 $ worth. I will discuss it with the friends, maybe it could be up for sale?!!?

finally somebody on here builds a nice ramp again!! been seein too many crappy ones latley. nice work!

Jason1
11-02-2003, 10:27 PM
thats very nice work... however its in entirely too uniform. all your pieces line up with eachother and theres no corner or X bracing. i bet i could grab that and flex it from side to side with my bare hands,. i would remove those two horizontal pieces in the back and put an X in there.. wouldnt hurt to put one in the front either.

Jason1
11-02-2003, 10:53 PM
also, to save weight.. you could eliminate most if not all of those cross suports on the bottom rails... those really arent needed at all. maybe keep one in the middle or something if ya want for added strength if your paranoid. why lug around all that extra weight if ya dont have to right ?

and 3-400 hundred for plywood ?? man .. im anti ply wood to begin with and if it costs you that much SCREW THE PLYWOOD.. sheet metal is a thousand times better. not only does it add strength to the structure of the ramp but it looks better and lasts longer and ALOT less hassle. because then you put epanded on it and you get superior traction and you never have to touch any of it again.

also back to the X bracing.. im building a landing ramp now.. the thing weights several tons and before i put X bracing in it i could grab it and flex it and shake it and i could stand back and watch it vibrate for about a minute.. i put angles and X"s in it and it stopped it like a rock. an X makes triangles and triangles are the strongest shape there is.. corners are good but they only make 2 triangles, X's make 4 all pushing on eachother... but either one works.. you look at any structure, houses, buildings, towers.. they all have X's , cuz X"s kick *** .

that 6 ft wide rev 3 i just built was FULLY welded with 14 and 11 awg steel and i could flex it with my bare hands, i put one angled piece in it and it stopped it dead... then i added 8 more pieces to make it bulletproof. that thing will last forever. ( as long as they keep it painted well )

need any help dont hesitate to ask me, im glad to help at any time

muff
11-03-2003, 04:58 AM
what are you the hulk?

lol j/k with ya, a cross or two wouldn't be a bad idea, but we were jumpin on it and it wasn't movin at all so i dont think you could move it with your hands

whats this expanded stuff for the sheet metal? is it like a grippy compound or somethin?

Jason1
11-03-2003, 09:58 AM
do this..
get some of your amigos... have one stand on the very last cross support you have on the ground.. then get someone and stand on the one on the front. ... this is to anchor the ramp down.

ok, now you go to the tallest upright support in the back... and grab it and shake it from left to right.

something just smacked me in the head.. your building a 7 ft tall one.. now being that its only 7 ft combined with the fact you have two horizontal suppports in there, there is a chance it may not move very much... but that still doesnt change the fact it would be a heckuva lot stronger if you had X's or at least corners in there. but im betting if you get it a good enough tug it will flex on ya..

expanded metal is something would bascially have to see for yourself... its what we put on the surface of ramps.. find the thread of the ramp i just posted and check out the surface.. it gives ultimate grip and it doenst wear out. as in no recoating it with paint and sand. you put it on once its there forever.

Like Jason was saying, it's all about the triangles. Ever seen the inside of a NHRA Pro Stock car? The cage is full of triangles to keep the chassis from twisting. Why not just make it bulletproof with a couple of X's while your still working on it?

look at birdges.....full of triangles and are super strong

nice, did you bend it or just cut and weld?

NTPRacing#19
11-03-2003, 04:43 PM
are you guys gonna do some insane jump where you jump off the side??? lol do what you think will hold up your kicking *** on the project and sheetmetal in my head would suck if it ever got wet, you could look into some of that iron mesh that will give you a ton of grip and save alot of weight.

Jason1
11-03-2003, 05:29 PM
NTP, you cant just use sheet metal alone thats a given.. it must have some sort of alternative gripping... 99.9% of the time its raised expanded mesh .

you couldnt ride on bare sheet metal even if it were dry let alone wet.

Heres the rundown...

The whole frame is made up of 2" angle iron. All the supports are welded up and down the metal , no two pieces of metal that are touchin or even close to touching arent welded. Everything is welded together and no just **** welds, I've been weldin for about 4 years now so I've worked most of the cincks out. I have a buddy who is a professional welder and he has hooked me up with some lessons.

The face of the jump is all 2 inch square tubing, which wont bend if you wanted it to. That is also welded everywhere around. Even if it isnt needed, its welded.

My friend and I bounced all over it today, pulling on it and tryin to make is move just a bit but we didnt get anything. I really appreciate everything that you guys are saying, giving me ideas for new ramps and such. We are prolly gonna rail this for the off season till racing starts up again then I am gonna sell it and start another. I know that this one is gonna be strong but just to make yall happy I put some X supports in the next one :D

So, Jason, give me your true thoughts on this ramp, this is the 6th ramp i've built, 5 were last year and they were just small things, biggest was 5 ft tall. I made this big cuz I wanted to go big this year. I have experiece weldin and all, so Im not one of these stupid kids that builds a big ramp outa wood and doesnt put more than one nail in it.

Ive put a lot of time and effort into this and I feel it is goin to be very strong. I am not finished yet but will hopefully by this weekend. I am goin to put the pieces at the tops of the corners, little pieces that make triangles, I have done that on my other ramps but it just slipped my mind.

So just give me waht you think.....I hope I'm not one of those dumbazzes you were talkin about in the 102 post...

lol welp.... you cant really see what your made of unless you make it all our of square tubing and its 8+ feet tall haha... im half joking of course .. but the serious part of that is for the reason being of the sensitivity of it all the, tall the ramp the longer meaning overall size is bigger and square tubing is stronger and more sensitive to work with becuase of the thinner walls. i can make a full size ramp and not have anything be off on it at all... ive seen peoples ramps pull several inches out of wack at the drop of a hat... smaller ramps are easier and angle is easier to work with becuase you compensate by getting twice as thick of metal and that absorbs more heart plus there are less sides to deal with.

however. you do very nice work.... im impressed.... just a few minor things like previously stated like the two horizontals in the back really arent needed and all the horizontals on the bottom really arent needed and they all just ad weight.. however theres certainly nothing wrong with it except just make sure you get some sort of corner or X bracing in there to keep rock-solid bullet proof. its also good to keep deifferent designs going cuz its kinda crappy to see all the same stuff out there all the time so all that stuff in there definately looks cool.

overall i give that ramp you built in those pics a 8 out of 10 .

keep up the good work, and no your not a ramp buildererere poser

I think jason was saying. I think the rame has some metal in the place. The ramp looks like it would stand up for years but it looks like you could have use less metal while making a strong and light rame. It looks like real good work and a nice but I think the design is a little off. I wouldn't worry about though know but one of the biggest problem i had with my bmx ramp i built out of metal was it weight a ton and I wish i made it light.
