this season is over and the 400ex claimed some pretty damn impressive class wins...not to mention a few class wins at the 12 hour race. way to go 400ex. it may not be the new "quad" to have but it is still capable of being riden at the top of the class.:macho

Lets see... 2003 GNCC 4 stroke A class was won by a rider on a 400ex..:o

2003 12 hour race B class winners and members of the page won on a 1999 400ex...:o

For those that think the 400ex is old and out dated and holding you back.. Your wrong. If you suck now you'll suck on it, plain and simple. I'd like to know how much money is being lost and wasted on people buying new quads thinking it will make them faster, only to find out that they still get beat at the races by the same people they were beat by the week before..:o

Long live the fo hunny...:D

Oh, what are u guys talking about. The new YFZ rev's so much faster and has higher top speed, better suspension.

I'm still very happy with my 400

The 400ex can go out and still whoop some ***, but it will take you ALOT more money to make it go as fast as these new quads comming out. And the guys that race MX, a faster quad can definitly earn you a few spots in a race.

so it is still worth having hte ex to race for mx? and put a 425 kit into her, and a set of elkas with +3 jd standered travel and jd rear swing arm? i am thinking it would cost to much and would be cheapier to buy the new trx450? i am a Novice rider, i am not power but some tracks am looking for better performance in suspension and handling and in power, when i find my self in 5th gear! i really love the ex but the engine is a xr400, which is a trail bike. Don't get me wrong here, it has been the best i have had, but i am looking for something faster and stronger for mx racing?
what should i do? Will i be happy with the power of the 426ex? is it worth going standered travel or should i just get long travel which sounds like the better idea??
thanks for your input!!

Bro, the mods your asking about your going to have to do to both bikes no matter what. The stock suspension on the new Honda isn't going to touch an aftermarket one. Same thing with the a-arms.

Doibugu2 are you trying to say, stick with the ex.?.? i ready have some minor mx mods done to it which can be easily transfered to the new trx450. Axle, and rims and tires. But i love the looks of my ex with the blue hood on it and saved fenders compared to the trx450...

I agree here! My son keeps saying he wants a 250r cuz his cousin just got one & they will unfortunetly be racing in one class together but we keep telling him IT'S THE RIDER ABILITY!!! He'll do just fine on his lil' ol' blaster, he's a "better" rider than aolt of kids I see out there when it comes to alertness, reflexes, ect & I think it has alot to do w/ all the trail riding we do & different terrains. Anyway blah blah blah;) :)

Well i disagree about wasting money on a new quad. I am turning alot faster lap times since ive switched. I think it has made me a better rider to have a nicer quad. Like if i went back to the 400 i would be faster than i was before on it.

Even if you suck its still fun to have alot of power. And its all about fun, right?

Well the way I see it sure the 400ex can still win races, but it takes much more money to do that compared to a YFZ for example. Sure the YFZ is more money as a base price, but will take less money to ride better on. IMO

4TraxRider
10-29-2003, 04:50 PM
The way I see it mostly, is if your building an all out MX machine, your getting all the same parts for the quads pretty much anyway. The YFZ and TRX will be better racers stock, and a little better modified granted, but they will cost about the same in the long run. JMO

i agree.

i didnt start this thread to piss anyone off...i just find it hilarious that some people are dumping off thier $12,000 race quad to by a stocker that will need $5000 worth of suspension to be at the same level as thier old quad. dont get me wrong ....there are exceptions...im refering to the average gump not creech:p

hell..i see blaster tear 250r's up all the time:huh

10-29-2003, 05:12 PM
i'd stick with the 400 and its reliability for acouple years until we can see if the YFZ or TRX are as reliable as the 400. Plus there are tons of aftermarke t products for the 400 since its been out so long. People may say the 400ex sucks and stuff, but look at how many years its stood its ground, and its still winning races today. Do not put down the 400ex

Pappy- do you still have the set of axis shocks for the 400ex?
if so pm with pricing.

also is it worth it to put a 426 kit in the ex motor(mx of coarse) and then still do some suspension. (all i need is a set of good a arms, shocks and rear shock with rear swing arm)..
or buy a new machine and do all the same to it? really if i get the new 450's it will cost a lot more to do, but it is newer, probably more power then a 426ex.
I don't even know if i would be happy with a 426. I have ridden yzf426 and KTM 450 in quad frames and damn i love those thing to death, they got mean power and hte ktm has wicked handling and sit real low, awsome for mx. But the owner payed a lot for it, but he got his money worth.

ya and all i can say is god damn i am in love. nothing else i have ridden compares. Holly ****, axis shocks are amazing, handles great, 1st gear felt like 3/4 on my ex. it will pull, it is smoth power band, not like the 426/450. I would do the same if i had the cash becuase you can't go wrong with that set up he has!!!!

I knew this thread would raise the blood pressure of a few members...:D

I'm not tryin to say it's the best quad out there. Just pointing out that it's not the POS out dated quad most people think it is. All i see that the new honda and yammi have over the 400ex is a stronger motor, shocks, calipers. Jeff mentioned Cooks 400 needed a couple motors and frames. We'll see what the yammi's and honda's have at the end of next race season. Also some guys build motors too the max and forget about reliablity while doing it. Shame on them.

Freeride mentioned how many titles the 400ex got this year. How many did the new yammi or any other quad get?? 250R won the pro GNC class and a Z400 won the pro prod class. Put gust on a TC built 400ex and i bet he could do the same on it..:blah:

Have to agree with everybody on the 400. It is still one of the best and most reliable quads out there. For instance.... I finished first in "C" modified this year on a stock engine and 4th overall in 24 - 35 open on my stock engine. Not bad for my first year racing I would have to say.

I agree with the 400 being "good enough for most". I ride with a guy on a 300ex that will still show me a thing or two. Yes, he would be better off on a 400ex or 450, but he still kicks most of the people we ride with @$$. Long live the 400! (at least until they put an electric start on the 450R and I hit the lotto! that about sums up the entire debate.

at this level of racing, it is not so much the quad, it's the rider.

1960's technology can still shoot down an F-18. whats the point?
