View Full Version : Port & polish with a stock (rejetted) carb?

I'm getting ready to buy a 416 piston & xr cam. I was just wondering if it would be worth it to port & polish the head while I've got the motor apart. I've read here that the stock head already flows way more than the stock carb, and I am not planning on changing the carb for some time (I might not ever change it). So I know it's a good idea to do all the work at once, but is it a good idea to do it knowing that I might not switch the carb? The work will cost $175ish, will I notice 175 bucks worth of power gain?

i wouldnt, unles u gt a new carb, the head flows more anyway, be a waste. get a cam, or handlebars

If your read about his quad below, you would see that he already has RENTHALS, and if you read his post closely...you would see that he is already getting a CAM.

You could port and have your stock carb modified.

Why not just put that money towards a brand new carb

Would a carb show a bigger power gain than the cam/piston?

The more you do to your motor, the more the carb will help. I'd say maybe with that extra money you have buy a more agressive cam than the xr. Your first step should be the cam and piston.

yup cam and high compression piston and then after that get a fcr carb and a port later on as you get the money.

Is there another cam that has a more aggressive grind than the xr400 but doesn't require hard facing the rockers?

There's the hrc cam, i'm not sure on that price. GT Thunder cam, it's $150. Then there's Curtis Sparks cams, one is $150, the other is $350. A TC cam which is right around $170 i think

Yup,,don't do the port/polish spend the money on something else or save up for a bigger carb.

Thanks for all the advice. Looks like I'll skip the port & polish for now & do a little more research on what cam to buy.
