No work today. Fires have destroyed close to 500 homes in San Diego county, including the one I just finished. Dam. So many people lives affected. I tried to make it into work today only to be turned back by police. I heard from the company I am working for that the house I finished friday burned to the ground. Bummer for many reasons, for me because I had about $2k worth of tools there. It looks like a war zone. everywhere you look everything is just gone. Fires burning all over with nobody to fight them. 12 people killed already, and the fires are still raging. I think I'll stay home and watch the news all day.

Are they gonna start sending in help from elsewhere?

Alot of us from here, went to ny to help with the 9/11 attack
and I'm sure people from all over would be glad to help put a stop to it.

I'd rather go out there and help then go back to work today:macho

I couldn't imagine having invested 6-8 months or whatever time frame into building a house only to have it burnt down..:( That sucks bad..........

A family friend I've known for over 20 years was out of town and his son called him telling him the fire was 2 houses away and the firemen were leaving because they couldn't do anything...not sure if it's still standing.:(

I know the Ministry of Natural Resources here in Ontario Canada has been contacted and has been asked to send some of it's forest fire fighters down there to help get this all under control . I work as a volunteer forest fire fighter up here and theyve sent us all over this year . Not sure if they want to send my crew out there or not but we'll soon find out . I'd be glad to go and help , as long as the college I'm at lets me maintain the grades i'm at and not have them drop . If they don't allow me to maintain the same grade until i get back I wont be able to go .

how was the fires started

Glamis400ex
10-27-2003, 01:06 PM
The main one was started by a lost hunter in the wilderness, shooting of a signal flare.

I've heard others were started by idiots throwing lit road flares out of a moving vehicle into the brush...not sure though.

It is so smokey at my house, it's like dense fog with 1/2 mile visibility.

:( I hope they get this under control.

I heard the main one was set at a military base during live-fire exercises?

I heard that too... now they are blaming a hunter or some guys with flares...

They are also saying it is caused by "santa ana winds" which is warm, dry winds and they say that it should stop in about a week when the winds will die and moisture will come or something like that :huh

The Camp Pendleton fire WAS started by Marines using live ammo. The weather conditions only made it way worse. Camp Pendleton is in the extreme north part of SD county.

The Ramona area fire was started by a hunter's flare gun. And that grew into a nightmare. It's basically a 25 mile long ring of fire.

The ones in the southern part of the county, I'm not sure about.

GlowPlug , the BC fires this year were the worst i have ever seen . Hard when you can't do anything about it and you watch peoples homes go up in flames . Did you see what Molson Canadian did for the BC fires?? They gave a dollar for every beer sold in BC to help fight the fires and keep the fire fighters safe and full of food . Was nice on their part .

Thanks for all the kind words and thoughts guys. My parents house was somehow spared... when others in the neighborhood went up in flames.:( Another buddy of mine had the fire stop 2 houses away...no damage.

It's been a rollercaoster ride here to say the least.

There's a pretty healthy section of fire marching right towards my house...about 1 1/2 miles away. bummer...we'll see how it goes tonite.

We are sending a bunch of trucks and guys from Vegas. We are also doing bottled water drives for the firefighters. Also don't forget to give to the Red Cross if everyone on here gave $1.00 that would be a big help.

And it is still out of control:( My nephew was evacuated from the place he was staying, they saved the dog but had to put their horse down to save it from burning. On his way out he tried to help two cops save a couple of small kids in a car and couldn't. They burned to death right in front of them. The cops and him got burned trying to save them. He is OK but he said the cops tried so hard to save the kids thier uniforms were burning off them. He is pretty shook up. It is a bad time for CA. Now they reported some low lif pieces of sh*t people are looting peoples homes.

I'll keep you all informed as news comes in.

They say the smoke and ash is gonna reach 1000 miles away. Today it finally wasn't that bad to go out with the ocean breeze blowing the smoke the east.

My prayers go out to everyone in Cali. My best friend lives in Spring Valley and said it is pretty close to him. Close enough he emptied half the house and all his quads/cycles and took them to his father-in-laws in Laguna Nigel. He said it was "snowing" ash and had to use the windshield wipers in the morning to see out the window. Scary stuff. Hope everyone kept their insurance policies up to date. Our house burnt down when I was a little kid so I understand how devastating it is:(
