My friend recently bought a 400ex for $1250 that didn't run. We figured we could rebuild everything and still not lose money. It has shocks, exhaust, graphics, wheels, tires, full skid..etc.. We rebuilt the top end and started her up. There was a clanking noise. Could this be the cam change. It had been adjusted out all the way.

What kind of clanking noise? Where does the noise come from?
Did the motor keep running or did it stop ( on it's own )?

It could be your valves, timing or timing chain,
Did you put the piston on right ( not backwards ) whitch is easy to do? Did you tork all the bolt and studs properly?

The motor ran and sounded good, except for the clanking. It sounds like the cam chain. I just hope it's not in the bottom end. One of the rocker arms was a little wore but he got new ones. The chain tensioner was adjusted all the way. I think it got stretched. The crank was secure. The rod was fine. What do you think

We adjusted the valves, the piston was in correctly.

you probably should have replace the timing chain if you needed to replace the rockers also if the tensioner is not working it will let the chain slap around and makes a horrible clanking soud, it sounds as if your rod is knocking around in the cylinder

We used the clymer manual for the tork specs. I quess it could be the timing chain.
