I changed the front sprocket to a 16 tooth today on my 400. However, I noticed even with the new sprocket, it was very loose on the counter shaft.

Has anyone ever had their counter shaft splines completely stripped off?

Any ideas on what may have caused this?

The only thing I could think of to slow this down is start greasing the splines after pressure washing it.

Thanks for your help!

The front sprocket is going to have some movement in it. This is to help prevent binding/unecessary wear on the countershaft under load. Unless you can see evidence of stripped splines or unusual wear, don't worry about it. :)

There is supposed to be some play in the sprocket. Have you looked at the splines? Are they stripped? I would say you are ok.

Yea I might just be paranoid, but dam this thing seems to be getting looser every race. I thought it was probably just the cheap sprocket, bit even the new rental sprocket is loose as some of the women I used to date.

No, the stock cover won't work but Pro Designs makes a case saver that will accomodate the 16 tooth. It is a bit costly, but probably worth it.

You can still use the cover whit the 16 you just can't use the gard
for the cover just make little spacer to make up for the garde

The stock case saver will fit a 16 tooth with some grinding. You aren't left with much material, but I would still give it some trust up against a flying chain. It is much better than having nothing there. Otherwise, the Pro Design case saver works.
