View Full Version : Tightening chain on 400ex

Did a search and didnt find anything that helped. What is the proper way to tighten your chain on a 400ex? and no I dont have a manual.

Just loosen the 4 allen head bolts one the swing arm then stick a big screw driver into one of the slots by the rear sprocket(not in the rear sprocket) tighten it until you have about a 1/2 inch play of up and down play in the chain.

I would try 1-1/4 to 1-5/8 inches. I just got it from page 3-13 of the 400ex service manual. AtvMxRider you were a little off. Now if you would have told him to fully compress the rear suspension a half inch would have been fine. With a progressive suspension, the chain actually tightens up as you compress the rear shock so you need more than a half inch of slack in the chain.

Sorry Jerry,

Honda recommends 1 3/16 - 1 9/16 (30-40mm)

DID recommends " 'follow recommendation in owner's manual' Standard chain sag is 20~25mm"

Actually I left that part out, I usually have someone sitting on my quad when I adjust it. Sorry

What would the effects be of over-tightening it? Pulled teeth?

if its too tight u can screw up the bearing carrier too.
