Hum... there is a bunch of programs that’s spouse to speed up downloads, but the fact is there is only so much data you can suck through a phone line at one time. Once you have reached it that’s it nothing else will help. Want better speed get DSL, cable, etc.

It’s kind of funny for me because I have cable at home and when I come back from work it’s just kind of like UHG this **** takes for ever over a cable line. But that’s just because I'm connected to a T3 line at work. Avg download time for a song is like 3 to 5 seconds from some one with a fast connection. Where as on a phone line the best you could hope for is 15 to 20 minuets per song. Avg time overcable is 3 to 5 minuets.

Alot of that depends on the server's upload speed. If you have an OC-48 line and the person you are downloading from has 56K, you aren't going to get it in 3 seconds..

He said IF he finds a fast host to download the song from, not from everyone.

Dsl can get a song in about 1 min, but once again it depends on if there are fast hosts up at the time.

Your raw speed was 3097600 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications
3.1 megabits per second

Storage
378.1 kilobytes per second

1MB file download

I just did this over at bandwidthplace.com. This is usually what I get... sometimes a tad slower, around 2.8 megabits per second is my slowest so far.

I have comcast cable and I pay about $42/month. I'm pretty damn happy.
:D

As soon as I got this cable setup, I went and downloaded a 80meg "trial" version of some software....took me 3 min to download it. :eek2:

I bet I can help...

What version of Windows?
What kind of modem do you have?
Take anything else off the phoneline and try your connection.

Let me know what Windows version and modem you have, and I can suggest some good init strings that will probably improve your connection.

With dialup access, speeds such as 53, 50, 48kpbs, etc. does not mean you have a better connection, throughput is what you want to acheive.

I'm running a LAN too. The only way download speed is affected by a network is if other users on the network are active also.

Not flaming, but your modem isnt giving you a correct speed. The highest speed allowed by the FCC is 53kbps with a 56k provider. If you are 'really' getting a 53.5kbps connection, your provider is breaking FCC laws.

and i manage them all!!! it's good to be the king

oh fergot to mention. they just put our GigE drop in 2 weeks ago. nothing on it yet....but it sure was damn fun to do the testing on it.

you thought regular Ethernet LAN analyizers were expensive? try $210K a pop for the GigE ones!!!
