It's based on a true story, but it isn't that closely based. I believe the guy they based it on was Ed Gein, who killed someone with a chainsaw and butchered them.

i saw it last night, first night out. pretty darn good movie. one of the scariest movies i have ever seen. it says its based on a true story but its very very loose. hondafox is right it was based on ed gein. he didn't live in texas either he lived in wisconsin not all that far from where i live actually. he liked to make lampshades and carpets out of ladies "parts". he did a lot of other sick stuff too like necropheliac stuff and cannibalism. look it up on the net. freaky stuff!

Gein was declared criminally insane in December 1957, and committed to Wisconsin's Central State Hospital. He Died there, of natural causes, in 1984. ;)
