Has anyone ever done a 5.0 V8 swap on a ranger?? Im thinking about doing it in the future and i need to know if i'm gettin into sumthing waaaaay over my head. I'm talkin like a v8 from either an Explorer or A Mustang. I could prolly get a motor from a local junk yard, but as far as other components...i have NO IDEA where to start!! Could anyone tell me about how much the project was or if you know anyone that did it...tell me PLEASE!!!

Thanx :blah:

I did one back in 89. I had a plain jane 4 cylinder 87 ranger 5 speed that was lowered. I put in a 302 with a C4 and it was carbureted. Got the motor mounts from advanced adapters. Headers were 66 mustang try-Y. I only had to grind a very small part of the frame in one place for them to fit. Drove it like that for around 8 years.

why waste your time on a v8, go straight for a v10

didn't cost me that much, i had a motor and trans from a 73 stang given to me by a friend, just honed it and put new rings in it. I ported the heads myself hand had the machine work done. I also put in a mild cam and a few other goodies. At one time I had a Cross ram intake on it with two 390 holleys. I looked pretty cool and it also ran great with that setup. I got a posi from a early 80's stang and swapped it into the stock ranger rear with the stock 3.45 gears. I rebuilt the C4 myself and it barked on the shifts pretty hard. I usually had a dual plane intake on it with a worked 600 holley carb and along with that I had a 150HP nitrous plate. Mine had only like 8:1 compression though because the stock pistons had huge dishes in them. It was a cool truck, I just got tired of driving it every day. Rangers are like belly buttons! I sold it and got my 62 Falcon. Here's a picture of the two together at a show. I painted them both by the way. The guy I sold it to took it to the same show that's how I got the picture.

It's not a Ford but it's the same principle. I put a 355 small-block in an S-10. I already had an engine, trans and posi rearend so that saved me a nice chunk of change. My buddy owns a speed shop so I got all my boring, align honing, head work, etc. done for free. But, it's the little things that you don't take into consideration that kill you. My S-10 was originally a 4 banger so when I put the small block down in the front end sagged too far because of the weight. I found some springs from a V6 truck with A/C that were heavier, stock radiator wasn't near big enough so I had to have a 4-row built, then there's wiring, fuel pumps, electric fans, fuel cell, new seats, door panels, dash and a slew of other stuff. I bought my S-10 body minus a motor and trans for $700. After already having a block, rods, crank rear end and tranny it still cost me nearly $6000 to complete the project.

I was pondering on doing this exact conversion for a 94 ranger this year, since my engine and tranny are basically dead with 400k of miles I needed something new. Im rethinking it because I have heard that with this conversion these things will not turn for ****. So yea, go chevy and get an silverado SS :p

My buddy put a 302 into an 85 ranger.First he had the 5 speed. It broke though. So he put a 4 speed in it.

The truck was fun.It was also fast.In the rain it was useless though. Also if you got on it at all below 35mph the tires would light right up.Kind of useless having that kind of power when you can't even put it to the ground. The motor mounts where custom made. The headers he bought. He also had an edelbrock intake,A holley 600cfm carb, headers,Comp cams cam,The heads where mildly ported by his neighbor that built stock cars. The motor probably had around 300 horse and 350 foot pounds. The rearend gears where 3:08's.

Just to give you an idea.I had a 4.3 sonoma with an edelbrock intake,5.7 tbi, throttle body spacer,Edelbrock headers and there cam and lifters. The truck also had 3:73 gears and a 700r4.I could beat him with my sonoma any day of the week from a light. But from a roll from about 45 up he would kill me.He could lay posi marks 4-ever.

Check www.rangerpowersports.com. It's basically like EXRiders.com, but for Rangers ;).

It can be a lot of work if you want it done good, and trucks handle like chit when it's rainy out or snowy when they have a big powerplant in them like that. A mustang engine would work out good. I think the 87's work good, but I can't remember, goto that website and they have a section on motor swaps.

My cuz' went with an S10 for his swap, it turned out very nice.
