Is there any advantages of having a 416 instead of a 440? Other than if you have any problems, still having room for a 440 sleeve?

In a somewhat mild setup-(say 11:1 JE Piston, XR or HRC Cam, my Yoshimura slip-on and power kit, modified header, cleaned-up porting, advance key...stuff like that) for all-around and woods/trail, how much bigger will the numbers get with the 440, and what will be the key diferences and characteristics??

Thanks a lot for your help

In most cases, a 440 will have more torque and overall more power than a 416 in mild form, however the 416 will rev quicker and give possibly more top end due to a ligher piston. You really wont notice that big a difference from a 416 to a 440 in overall horsepower, if you take a totally stock motor and bore it to 416 you wont notice much difference and the same for a 440, the difference comes when you add a cam, porting and all that good stuff, high compression piston, etc. I personally like a 2stroke, and I find the 416 more suited to my type of riding. I am not a fan of just a total torque motor like the 440's that I have ridden. However, a reputable engine builder can basically take a 416, a 426 and a 440 and make them do whatever you want them to, you can make a 440 as a top end machine and make a 416 make torque out the *** if you want to. Its all in what you wanna make it do. A 416 is probably more reliable and definately cheaper, so thats smething to think about.

It's really not the weight of a 86mm (416) piston to a 89mm (440) piston that accounts for the power curve and rev-ability (is that a word?) of these motors.

There's only about a 20 gram weight difference between some of the kits and the stock assembly. A dollar bill weighs 1 gram, btw.

The larger displacement motor will have it's power peak at a lower rpm than a smaller one, and the power will drop off quicker after the peak. That's why a stock cammed 440 will have better acceleration but a lower top speed than a stock bore motor. It runs out of air at high rpm's; damn thing can't breathe.

Change to a larger, more appropriate cam (the first limiting factor on these motors), and that's a different story. A larger motor always has more power potential.

For play riding, the automatic additional torque of a 440 makes the $130 extra cost over a 416 worthwhile, imo.

Thanks for your opinions, any more?

I can only say one thing...

I have YET to find a 430 or 440 that I could not beat in drags, in any condition. I don't know if I picked the magical combination of displacement, compression, cams, exhaust, jets or what...but I am VERY glad I went with what I have over a 430 or 440 setup.

my $.02
