My friends 400 pops into neutral when he's taking off in 1st especially if he's doing a wheelie. Any ideas?

Bent shifter fork would be my guess.

I agree it sounds like an overheated or bent shift fork. You will have to split the cases to change it. Get a manual it is not that hard you just need a few special tools to make it easier:)
