$4800 for a used 400? That doesn't sound like a very good deal unless it is nearly new and/or has some mods...

IMO that still isn't that great of a deal. Sure, the 400ex is an awesome machine but it is becoming very old very fast. Alot of your desision will depend on what type of riding you do and what type of riding you will be doing in the future.

That's great if you have room to do it. When riding trails it is rare that there is a spot to do that.

true but i dont ride trails that tight, i think the 400ex is still competitive til u get to the a level or pro

yah but the more i tink about it the 400ex has more aftermarket options than any other quad and i kinda want sumtin cheap cuz all im really using it for is racing wit my friends and then trail ridin. the other quad i wud of bought wud of been a z400 and all taht really had on the 400ex was rev. and liquid cooled. the liquid cooled part i cud barely caer about im not runnin it wide open for that long neways.

You're lucky to have trails wide enough to spin it around. But saying reverse is stupid is very narrow minded thinking.

I agree the 400ex is very competitive. But what is more important for the general public is the versitility of the 400ex. It can do virtually every type of riding with just a few mods and be competitive.

If you're OK with spending the money for a new quad that is great and I won't hold that against you. If money is an issue a used 400 could be a great deal and you might have some money left over to do some add ons. Honda is known for it's reliability.

reverse?? whats that?? i dont use that and i trail ride

I trail ride, most of the time I can spin around in almost all trails. Or if theres any slopes on the side of the trail (which is common at many riding places I have been to) I just ride up and go back down with the clutch in. Even if I cant do that, how lazy do you have to be to not want to just pick the back end up and around.;)

its a nice feature during xc races, heres a scenario- your on a z400 and you hit a tree

pop it in reverse, thee 1st and take off again

now your on a 400ex and hit the same tree-

undo the kill switch, get off, walk behind the quad and lift it, pull it back, turn the handlebars, get back on, hook up the kill switch, start the motor and takeoff.

sounds like reverse has an advantage or two to me!
