could be your pilot jet is either pluged or to small of one if you are running a stock carb you need a 42 or 45 pilot.

if your piston compression is over 11:1 u may want to run mix of race gas and 93 octane or straight race gas...11:1 and lower you can run 93 octane...which is premium unleaded

It would foul your plug if it was jetted right, but your oviously lean and it needs the extra gas to run.

I wouldnt run it anymore with out rejeting. You're way too lean. Running lean= running hot. If anything on a new motor you need to be just a hair rich. just be patient and go get the jets.;)

choking it is cutting off air, making it run richer......

Yup, if it runs better with the choke, then you are running too lean normally. By restricting the air supply with the choke, you are decreasing the amount of air being mixed with the same amount of fuel going into the engine, making it run richer. So jet richer on your main and go from there.
