I have rode one around a field and the power was very nice. No big hit but pulled hard and smooth. The suspension was very stiff but it was one of the first models that they have changed since then.

Yes they are fast. Very smooth, controlable power. This makes it real easy to ride. I have had some good times on mine. Great trail machines and also great on the track. They are a little stiff, but can be fixed.
I got one for sale if you want one......:)

fast? yep! what specs are you looking for? the '04 has a number of upgrades over the '03 from what i've read & i got one of the updated '03 models. they run like scalded apes once broke-in.

I am thinking about buying a gas gas, but am wondering how reliable they are. it's either one of them or a raptor. what do you think? i know that the raptor is less maintenance cause it's 4 stroke, but i am concerned about the gas gassince it's a 2 stroke 300 that is 1 cylinder. that must be a lot of compression and wear on the one piston. if anyone has one i would appreciated some feed back. thanks.

Gas Gas also makes a 450 4-stroke.
Comparing a Raptor to a Gas Gas is like comparing your family car to a Nascar.

All in all, I think the GG is pretty reliable. I had a few little problems with mine. Then it was one of the first ones, so I expected some things to go wrong.
I really like riding mine. I test rode a YZF 450 and it felt small compaired to the GG. The GG is very easy to ride, the power is so smooooth! I had a 450 but they had some problems with it. I would assume they would have them fixed for the '04 models.
Feel free to email me any questions. ;)

the GG HP300 is very reliable for a 2-stroke. the GG HP450 is still questionable IMO, but the '04 may be different. the '04 models have some improvements coming including a radiator guard and supposedly a better gas cap.
like jeff said, comparing a raptor to a HP300... they may both be classified as 'sport' machines, but they are completely different. your choice of which one you buy should be dictated by what you plan to do with it. to upgrade the raptor to have the frame & suspension tha GasGas has means spending some $$$$. on the other hand, if you don't race MX, desert, ride the dunes, or need the suspension width & adjustability, why bother? although they are cool & fast, the width is a down side to the GG in the woods.

which brings us back to the age old question to help you out.... what kind of riding do you do?

I don't race. I mainly ride trails and some private tracks. I love to jump !! that is part of the question about gas gas vs raptor. i know the gas gas has ohlins shocks w/rez but i don't know about the raptors. i like to go fast but my main concern is handling. i don't want to have to buy new shocks for a raptor to accomodate the jumps we do (nothing amazing but we get 5 feet off the ground-- bottom of tires) but i also want to smoke my friends zuki lt 250 that is piped and jetted. suggestions ?

why not consider the YFZ450? it fits what you want to do better, & they are fast with very minor mods.

Cain 73 the 04 450 GasGas will done in about a month and will have more of what you are looking for then the YFZ. My race team will have two of them with 463cc or 500cc kits in them because they will be running in the pro class. The YFZ will need a swing arm and a-arms if you are going to jump it.

cain73, you sound like me. I like to race some but I do alot of trails. It sounds to me like the GG is what you are looking for. When I took mine to Wisconsin this year it was like riding nothing else. It was like riding a sports car on the trail. It was so smooth, I know I was going way faster then I should have. I had it in 5th and 6th gear most of the time. The GG is the first quad that I felt I had control in the air. They are really balanced and love to be jumped. I say get one. I heard that the '04's are going to be higher priced.

The big ? is, is it as good as the YFZ ? Maybe Brain Cook can tell you after this weekend. LTZ 500 vs. YFZ 470 vs. GasGas 463.

Yes, the power if much more smooth. It is not a light switch power like the Banshee. Stock for stock, the GG is going to be faster. ;)

Doesn't anything?
I was really impressed with the handling of the GG. It is really well balanced also. Which probably helps with the handling. The only thing is the suspension is pretty stiff. It takes alot of time to get that dialed in.

the '04 Gasgas have a few improvements coming to the quads... different radiator with guard & regular radiator cap, screw-on gas cap, better water pump impeller, & i'm sure they are working on suspension & handling too....

i'm still working on dialing my suspension in... i make one change at a time, take notes, & see how it works...

Don't be too impressed. Sure it looks cool, but mine leaked. There is no feeling like getting off you quad after a race and smelling like gas. A screw on cap would be the way to go.

i rode a gas gas and i thought the handling was poor but im use to thumb throttle it has twist so if ur use to twist the handling might be great im a quad rider not a dirtbike rider so the handling might be great

AndreS
11-16-2003, 02:37 PM
i had a thumb throttle on my LT and i didn't like the twist either... so i had trinity send me a custom 41" cable made by terrycable for $35 and bought a banshee thumb throttle. on ebay.... problem fixed for $70
or you can get a terry or moose billet throttle, $110-120

i dont kno y they would put a twist throttle on the gas gas

oynot400
11-16-2003, 04:00 PM
I told John at Gas Gas that they needed to offer a thumb throttle for there quads. He told me that there market research told them that a twist throttle was what the people wanted. I think they only check in Europe, not the USA. I put a thumb throttle off a LT250r on mine. The cable is a little short but with some creative routing it works fine.

I have no doubt that a modded shee or 250r will out run the Gas Gas. But stock for stock, the GG will walk all over it. Now take the same amount of money that you put in your shee and put it in the GG. That would be interesting! :D

I knew what ya meant...just play'n with ya.:p I'd love to have the GG450 though, they look pretty pimp. Wish I could afford one & take the money I've put into mine and throw into it like ya said...hell yeah! That'd be badarse!:D
