fresh 416, hotcam II, head port. started without a hitch, ran good for a half mile, started running really rough, then quit. would poor jetting cause this, man it ran beautifully untill i got good and warmed up. i know it is not jetted even close to what it needs( still has a 155 main i think). im gonna do a check of the valve clearence tomarrow cause it kinda sounded like the intake valves wernt closing all the way and a little compression was being pushed back in the carb. suggestions???

Maybe you overheated it? That thing must have been running hot with a 155!!??. I would go up to at least a 165(Kehin).
Have you riden it since the problem started?

O/T...i just talked with a buddy of yours...sold him a bumper...he is heading for a riding trip somewhere...seemed like a nice guy

double check the valves....and make sure all electrical connections are ok...ive seen people pinch wires when they re install the left side case.

i was planning on doing both of these, check valves and a new jet. it kinda sounded like when a vehicle engine diesels(if ya know the sound im talking about). or if its hitting on every other cylinder... it ran perfect for half a mile..? i can see the getting hot cause of being real lean. no i havent ridden it since, this happened last night about 10 and i came to work this morning. after work im gonna get a 170 main check the valves and try it again. my battery also needs a chargin, i tried to start it for about 5 seconds, then i had to hook up cables, a little choke and she fired, i was so happy.

Las Vegas,
That disel sound is detonation, not good for the motor!!
I bet when you fire it up tonight it runs fine, just change that jet so it doesnt happen again.
Check your plug too, you could have damaged the electrode.
Might also think about getting the cooler plug too (if you dont already have one on it), I cant remember if its the 8 or 9, but do a search and youll find it.

The colder plug is the 9

i adjusted the valves at lunch, got almost 1/4 turn to get to .005 intake and .006 exhaust. new jet, colder plug and ill try her again. i checked the oil and the dipstick was dry. i think with the extra cooler setting like it is, it stays full of oil hence needing more after everything got circulated. good news is there wsa oil on the rocker arms:)

it runs pretty good until it gets warmed up. i put in a 170 main and its a little better but still does it. its not as pronounced now.

Sounds to me like you should take it back apart. Something isn't right if you are hearing noises. Hopefully you haven't done any more damage by trying to run it. I have been there and done that. Freshly built motor and oops, forgot to torque head nuts down. It happens to the best of us. ;)

putting a bigger mj isnt going to help anything but wide open throttle. U need to tweak the air/fuel mixture screw, and move ur needle and also u might wanna get a 42 pilot.

I can't believe you started a fresh rebuild with a 155 main. I imagine it got smokin' hot. Did you break the cam in? Mine cut out like yours on the first couple rides. I have a 165 DJ main and a 42 pilot, so I ended up just opening up the fuel screw another 1/2 turn, and that seemed to cure it. I thought maybe I had water in my gas because that's how it acted, but apparently it was just lean on the idle circuit.

i totally agree, even a 165 is too big. i have the same set up as you but i didn't get the head ported and my bike is quickest with a 158 main in versus bigger jets. i have not even tried a 155 to see how it runs. with anything bigger than a 160 in, my friend can pass me with his slightly built 400ex. however, with a 160 or smaller, he can't get me up top. your mainjet is not your problem.

its fixed. i need to get a new plug, and run it to check how it is jetted. the one i have is fairly used, almost a year and a half old...
