could someone tell me what the valve clearance should be on a 400ex with a stage 1 hotcam with stock valves and springs?

hotcams recommend .005 for intake and .006 for exhaust. this is what they recommend for the stage 1 and 2. my friend found out with his stage 1 that going a little tight on .005 and .006 made his valves quieter.

This is a good question. I have a stage 2 and set it to their tolerances. It taps at start up. Goes away (mostly shortly after). I set it up with a little tighter (.004 and .005), it quited it down a little. I called Hot Cams, I asked him what hte tolerances were, he told me "5 and 6", I said "but", he cut me off and said, " it taps a littlle more than your used too , huh?" "Yep", I said. "Thats what they do, it has to do with the cam profile (duration and lift)", He said to "leave it at 5 and 6." I did and have experienced no cam or rocker arm wear after roughly 20 hours of dune riding.

i run my stage II at 5 for both the intake and exhaust you goin to hear tapping when ya first start it up because thats what the tolerances are for as the motor warms up everything expands and then the ticking goes away if you didn't have room to grow then you would end up burning your valves up so those tolerances are very critical and should always be set correctly:o
