It's pretty hard to explain I would do a search, I think the guy that invented it was Wenkel so maybe that will help with your search. Or watch for the RX-8 commercial, they breifly show a cut away with the internals rotating. Maybe there is a link on the Mazda website. It is a real simple design.

On a side note did you hear that Mazda was offering to buy that car back because the HP numbers were well below advertised numbers. I think they said the car was at 245hp but it turned out it was more like 215, not much different then a Ford Taurus.

Rotory's make more hp's per liter

Rotaries make more hp per liter (there are many 500+hp 1.3L 13B's running around). They tend to burn oil, blow apex seals, and puke motors (especially the late 13b's) so if you don't properly care for them or know how to work on them it can be a headache. Hopefully this current NA motor won't have the problems of the last (93-95) twin turbo.
I'd compare a rotary more to a 2 stroke, the principles are similar and the powerband is like a 2 stroke.

They never tend to be quite what they used to be after being rebuilt either:ermm: Maybe the new rotory in the RX8 will be diffenent though.
