Most people don’t know that in the U.S. it is illegal for someone under 16 to purchase an ATV or All Terrain Vehicle if its engine exceeds 90 cubic centimeters. A Cubic Centimeter is better known as CC. If my dad who is 42 years old went into an ATV dealership and tried to buy a 300ex which has 300cc it would be fine to do, but if my dad told the dealer he was buying it for his 14 year old son. He would be kicked out.
I feel that this law hurts more than it helps. They should take around six years off of this law. At ten years old any child is big enough to ride any CC four-wheeler. The parents should make the decision on how responsible their children are and how big the ATV can be. I seriously doubt that many people in Congress or The House of Representatives enjoy the great sport of riding ATV’s. So they don’t know what its like to ride an ATV that is twice as small as it should be for you.
Quads that are 90cc and under cramp bigger kids, and mostly all kids. Here are the reasons. The widest 90cc and under ATV I could find was only 27.3 inches wide.(#1) Where as my 330cc ATV is at 50 inches wide. Some of you may not think this is a big deal but it is. When quads or ATV’s are this narrow it makes them very top heavy, or easy to tip over. Since it is easy to tip its hard to take a corner too. You have to go really slow so you don’t flip it over. The funny thing about these ATV’s are the manufactures even call them “minis”. After they make these “mini’s” they put warning signs and stickers all over them telling kids that are under sixteen to ride a quad that is no bigger than this. A 16 year old is almost full grown. This just isn’t adding up. Another issue is how short these “mini’s” are. Most of them are around 42 inches long. That is shorter than my 330 is in width! This shortness makes it hard to go up hills because they will have a tendency to flip backwards. Not that they would have enough power to make it up the hill before stalling and rolling back down into a big crash.(#2) Suspension is another big issue when dealing with rough terrain. A mini has .6 in the front and 1.7 inches travel in the rear, which is not even close to enough. Think, with less than 2 inches of travel you have to go over huge rocks and ruts. My 330 has 7.2 in the front and 7.9 inches travel in the rear, you can also adjust how stiff the shocks are. (#3)
These ATV’s are just flat out more dangerous than larger quads. I have sat on these minis before and I don’t even feel like I could ride it. I feel cramped. And when I turned the handlebars they would hit my knees. If someone tried to tell me this would be more safe, I would beg to differ.
I’ve seen these small ATV’s wrecked and broke down in the woods many times because of rough terrain that I would have skipped over with my larger more stable quad.(#4) So next time you are at the dealership tell them this opinion. Eventually the news will get out and people will start to realize the dangers in these tiny quads. The laws will be changed, then it will be easier for everyone, both at the dealer and on the trail.
