well after spending the weekend at the new house...i dont think a loud thumper is going to cut it. if i ride it ill shake windows in the entire damn valley:(

so now im sitting here with the 440 almost done...wondering if ill even get to ride it at my new place. im sure i can ride it there (nothing sez i cant) but i think the right thing to do is to try and find something quieter:(

10-06-2003, 02:38 PM
::excuse to get a new quad:: Good idea Ken:p

well like i said...theres no law that sez i cant ride it...but i dont think its a good idea to move in a bust out a full race thumper and scare people half ta death. theres alot of quads in the area but most are tractors or stock

wow, that kinda sucks. I see what your saying here Pappy, but couldn't you just quite that beast down a bit? But if you think getting a new quad is the best idea, I won't blame you :D :p

Pappy
10-06-2003, 03:34 PM
the problem isnt just an occasional ride...i have already started on a course that should give me about a mile and a half loop on my property. an occasional ride on this loop at a trail riding pace probley wouldnt be so bad....BUT....i normally dont just putt along....and i dont only ride for 10 minutes. im expecting to ride for a minimum of an hour straight 3 or 4 times a week. there are no restrictions on my land....i just think the big thumper is gonna be way too much. even the new yammy and honda are loud with the stock exhaust.

there is a 2 stroke in the area (i heard and saw him riding) i was shocked at how quiet it was compared to a piped 400 that came thru a close by trail.

i dunno what to do cuz the cdale was gonna be the next quad i picked up...and although the stock exhaust level is a bit quieter then a piped 400...neither is as quiet as a 2 smoke. i didnt want to build another R (not yet anyway) and i sure as hell didnt wanna have to go thru selling off all my new parts for the 440:mad:

10-06-2003, 03:42 PM
i say just talk to the neighbors and see what they think about the noise, it cant be that loud. just put a quiet pipe on the 440 if you feel that badly about it. that sort of thing never really bothered me tho.

trx400ex
10-06-2003, 03:49 PM
Get a YFZ. you cant even hear them with the stock pipe.

Guy400
10-06-2003, 04:03 PM
Kenny, wait until you're moved in on a more permanent basis and see what others around you are doing. A piped ring-dinger will be just as annoying to neighbors if you're going to be riding that often. I bet you'll hear more thumpers around you than you realize right now. Give it some time and see what the story is. After a couple weeks you probably won't even give your 440 a thought when you start it up. I officially live inside city limits but have over 60 acres directly butting up against my property that people ride on all the time. I had my Cannondale, my cousin had a HMF piped 400EX, various dirt bikes, Z400's and other 400EX's. All vehicles piped except for my Dale and the law was never called on us. The only time I saw a cop even hassle anyone was when a kid on a 400EX was doing about 50mph down my street.

I would also talk to the neighbours, get to know them. If they wont like it, well thats still ok, cause you go through quads like people go through their underwear. lol j/k

But I guess do the only thing that you can do if they dont like it, sell her off. :grr: Then bling out another R :p

Pappy
10-06-2003, 04:49 PM
the "other" R has been obtained;)

did u already get a pipe for it? because the with the trinity u can get a silencer kit and it cuts like 9 decibals off:eek2:

10-06-2003, 05:10 PM
Why don't you get a stock silencer for riding around your house, then have the loud one for 'real' riding? This is what I do and it seems to be working fine.

i dont think a 13 to 1 440 is gonna behave itself choked up. and i dont just ride around...its WFO or its turned off:blah:

10-06-2003, 05:15 PM
I'm running a 12 to 1 440 and it runs fine with the stock silencer. The silencers don't really make a HUGE difference. Sure it's noticeable, but I think it's a more feasable option then getting a new quad..

10-06-2003, 07:01 PM
why dont u just buy some system for it like white bros or fmf where all u have to do is change the end caps to go from loud or quiet, it might cut performance down a lil but whats the difference

Pappy
10-06-2003, 07:08 PM
the difference is still substanial...and i have to live with these people for the next 30 years.

and have you ever tried installing and removing the end caps after riding in the mud for weeks on end? im not going thru the hassle.

Well Pappy, just to be a nice guy, I'll tell ya what I'll do. I'll swap the Yoshi back to the stocker on the little woman's 250 and trade ya even up. Heck, I'll even deliver it to ya.

Now how's that for helping out a fellow exrider.

If your neighbors complain about your thumper, tell dem to blame da CPSC for banning da damn 2-smokes  .

Seriously, If you think that getting even a quieter silencer will not help you, then I don't think theres much you can really do. Except get to know the neighbors and see how things go from there.

Hondagrl2
10-06-2003, 07:17 PM
Forget the neighbors...ride anyways thats what i do i jsut dont ride at night like after 10 so i dont wake them up. and if they have quads like you say then they are probably used to it!

Pappy
10-06-2003, 07:17 PM
well i geuss im getting old because as i sat on my porch i found the gently humm of that guys 2 smoke not too bad...and when the thumpers rolled in it even pissed me off:eek:

Chit Pappy, just go house to house on the 440, and introduce yourself as Pappy Jones, and ask them if they want to play keepin up with the Jones' I am sure if most of them have quads, as you say they do, they will get wood lookin' at your bling and just have to get in on the action. Then all will be well, and you'll have more PC customers.

park it out front for everyone to see and I bet your soon to be new friends will stop by and ask questions like is it for sale or how does it SOUND bring out the beer and discuss the tolerated noise level of the valley. :)

if i was in your shoes i'd try to find a junky 400ex for sale for cheap. fix it up almost like you have your racer(make it same lenth a arms and swingarm) and Put minor mods on it to make it quiter, like get one them quite pipes, then i use it to prac and have fun on then you could still have a quad almost as good as the racer and only use the racer for the races and a few laps at your place to get you used to that loud pipe again, well thats about what i did before i sold my old trx 300 2X4 it was fun,i kinda miss her,if i got tried of people gettin mad bout how loud my quad is and that they could hear my as soon as i hit the start button-so i'd ride the big 300 2X4,maybe not as fun but it would climb any hill i put it to and would jump the few jumps i had ,so if you could just find you a pos and fix it up alil you'll prob be fine, plus it can be something to pass down to the kids after you do decide to quit.well it's just an idea don't know if it would work it's been a year since i sold the 300 2X4 and everyone just about don't care anymore just as long as i don't ride at late hours. well, hope this helps you some,

Crazy Honda

This is simple your goina piss them off sooner or later so just get it over with then youll know which neighbors to have over for beer and ballgames:devil: why spend money on a place to not have your fun.that would be like building a pool and leaving it empty so no one drowns. tear it up and have fun...lol

Pappy ..I was in the same situation a few yrs back,I had no neighbors except 1 across the street,w/ all my pals coming over daily to ride my track,it did get quite loud and I'd notice the neighbors out in the yard watching ,! day I walked over to let him know Im a cool guy and if theres any problems..just let me know,I also had bikes, trikes quads and odysseys so I invited him over for a few hot-laps...problem solved:devil: :D Next thing I know,he's asking me questions about what unit he should buy:devil: :blah:

If you have a few spare rides kickin' around, ask em' to come on over and ride a bit...ya never know;)

first talk to the people that have quads and maybe they know the older folks that will complain and tell them its all cool or whatever. you know a friend of a firend.

but seriosly if your nice and introduce yourself and tell the people that have quads if its alright to kinda talk to the other people in the neiborhood about the noice.

hope it all works out for you

I wouldn't sweat the neighbors too much.
I've got a peice of land that I'll be building a house on soon enough, and plan to stay their till I die. I've built a track and a course through the woods and ride all the time on my Cannondale with HMF. One of the neighbors complained a few times, his house is right on my property line near the track. Last time he called me I told him he shouldn't have put his house on the property line ( he has 150 acres ) and I haven't heard from him since. I paid for the place, and I pay the taxes, I'm gonna enjoy it.

I even had the Cannondaleriders group ride there in Sept and with 30 dales and 10 or so others, trust me it got loud
