View Full Version : stick with cannondale or go with trx450r or YFZ 450

This was my first summer of racing my cannondale moto. The last race of the year i broke my crankshaft (~ $600). I like my cannondale moto but feel like i need more power. Heres my question. Should i replace the crankshaft and spend (~4000.00) for a southbay 450 kit or sell my cannondale moto on ebay for $5000.00 after spending almost $10,000.00 for it in the spring. Cannondale motos are only going for $5000.00 on ebay. Last year at this time, cannodale motos retailed for about 12,000. If i sold my cannondale moto on ebay for around $5000.00 ( i will be losing my shirt), i will go and buy either the new yfz or the trx450r. But then after buying one of these, i will have to buy a-arms, axle, smaller tires, extra schit for racing.
I am on a budget.
what should i do?
thanks

hold onto it

my friend is winning expert races and pulling holeshots on his '03 cannibal, its all about the rider until you get to pro... no matter how you look at it the yfz will need quite a bit of money to fit your liking

he's got the moto/speed map, Elka LTs etc. and wants to sell it cause he's possibly gonna get a dirt bike

4000$ for a 450 kit? That is absolutely absurd. Was it only the crank that broke? Are you sure nothing else internal was damaged? I would keep the dale if I were you. If you are a good enough rider you can keep up with the 450s.

I am leaning towards just getting my crankshaft replaced (hopefully that is all that is wrong), selling my long travel ohlins and get some different shocks with zps. Since it is my first year of racing, i am probably not a good enough rider yet to take advantage of all that my moto has to offer. Those are awesome pictures. That southbay 450 kit upgrade is ridiculus in price.
hey, thanks for the advice.

I know if I was in the market for another quad, I would be looking at a Cannondale... no question about it.

I'm surprised you really find the need for more power... I have not had much seat time on them, but after talking with guys that do race them, they seem to have more than enough. I think your right, ride it more...there is alot more potential to that quad... you just need to ride it and find where it is...

Keep it, you won't find a better stock frame for starters. Secondly, with ATK supplying parts and Dinli buying the motorsports division and claiming they're going to start full production again the parts will become available and they'll drop in price. Southbay also offers several different stages of kits varying in price. Upgrading your suspension and doing the Stage I Southbay kit you should be good to go.

southbay stage I is $2086.00
I will stick with the dale, get zps shocks to lower the quad for better turning. If i get zps on my ohlin shocks, will they be as good as the zps Pep, zps Elka and the zps axis? When they do zps to your shocks, it looks like they just put a spring higher up so you can lower the quad, and then they charge you $400.00 for fronts and $400.00 for backs. kind of expensive for just adding a spring.

i would keep the cdale your not going to get a better bang for your buck any other way. If you really think about it your going to have 12,000 + invested into the yzf before it is a higher level than the moto

Even tho i had problems with my Cannibal at first.. there is no way i would want another quad now.... I could not find a quad that is close to it...... Cannondales rule.. enough said

At my race circuit.... the CDales have ruled the last few races... NONE of our Dales have placed lower than 2nd in the last few races........ My dale has enough power that i could clear triples easily in 4th gear.... when most quads its a 5th gear jump....

I don't know who your getting your SSD conversion prices from but that is way high! Call around, The Elka kits are much lower than that and will make them work much better!

hey thanks for the info. I will stick with the dale even though your carryging around 25 lbs more in weight with a dale and a little less horse power compared to the yfz 450. But i am not about lose a shcit load of money by selling it on ebay.

I'd like to take one for a spin someday, never rode a c-dale. So it wouldn't be fare for me to judge.

I'd say stick with it, especially with all the dough you have invested.

How did you guys get that cool arial shot in there? Tower, plane altralight ect:confused:

the only thing the yfz has over the dale is that there will be lots of motor mods soon. i have heard in every real comparison (no mags) that the speed is almost identical to the yfz in every category. so the moto should be better anyway, plus you have a race ready quad now, why sell it and start over? the yammy isnt race ready no matter what yamaha says.

Hey cody, a friend of mine was in raths shop about a couple weeks ago and saw your yfz in there. he said it looked like the frame was cracked in few places.

How much for the quad shop to convert my ohlins to zps? Fronts and rear?

First off, I will agree the Southbay prices are NUTTZZZZ!!!!! Keep your Moto. I still think they are the best thing out there except for some built quads, and there are plenty of built quads that are not as good. Fix it, and spend your money on suspension upgrades. I am also gonna make a bold statement here, and I am probably gonna get flamed on, but I will anyway. YOU DO NOT NEED MORE POWER THAN THE MOTO HAS!!!! I guarentee you are not pushing that quad to it's limit. You would have to be in stupendous shape to ride one as hard as it could be ridden for a full 20 minute moto. That thing will rip your arms off. The season before last a rider by the name of Mark Burns just dominated on a stock one at nationals. He rode for Nac's. peace dudes....

I am going to get the southbay dependability kit ($1100) where they go into the engine and fix all the defects and make it bullet proof. Get a new crank installed (~ $600). What is the cheapest that someone will do the zps conversion to my ohlin shocks? i need to get low so i really dig into those corners
