the XR 70 was a good choice for my son to get his feet wet on riding a motorcycle; he made a ton of progress in the 6 races he competed in; his first race he took second....all the rest he placed firsts!:macho

Anyways, he was starting feel some pain landing with that weak suspension on the 70 and I think it's time for him to step up to a 65cc 2 stroke. Which one do you recommend? I only really know of the KX, KTM and SUZUKI as far as this size goes for MXers. Any help is appreciated..........JIM

of those three the ktm 65 is definatly the best one, then the RM65, and then the KX65, ive ridden all of these and the ktm was defintly the best one.

If he is over 12 I would suggest a 80 or 85 MX bike I moved up from an XR 80 and went to a KX 85 and had no problems, I find the 65s are really small and if he is over 10 he will probably out grow it within 2 years

I would go with the ktm. They are very high quality bikes, probably one of the best brands. Had a 125 and it was sweet, very nice bikes:)

go with the KTM 65 SX........the best bike in my opinion..My frined has one and he flys on it.But ya like others are saying..if he is old enough get an 80cc bike..I would go with the YZ 85

I don't know much about the 65's.

But for the 85's. The Suzuki and Kawasaki are suppose to be more of a beginner bike, while the Honda and Yamaha are for more advanced riders.

I think you might be better off with a 65. But I only know a little about the 85's not the 65.

I would not suggest going right to an 85. The 65 is a much more reasonable jump up. The KX/RM are exactly the same. The KTM is probably the benchmark for the 65s, but the KX/RM are not far behind. Plus there is a much bigger market (used, and parts) for the KX/RM.

Hey Jim,

My little bro went thru the same thing. We had a 70 then got rid of it and got him a KX65. It was a hhuge difference in suspension. I recommend getting the KX:D

the ktm 65s are known too be unreliable but the kx and the rm 65s are really good bikes (the same) so i would go with a kx or rm 65 or if you are going to jump right to an 85 go with an rm or a cr. Rm has a nice low end and the cr is just a honda which means its good

the ktm65 is a really nice bike, strong engine, great suspension, looks good, and has a hydraulic clutch. for all that performance you lose a lil reliability but any of the three you decide on will be a great bike :)

If your son has been riding a 70 four stroke I think the 80 or 85 2 stroke will be too much of a jump. I have a cr80 that I have had for a while and right now im 15. Let me tell you, it still scares the hell outa me. when you hit powerband and the front wheel lifts right up in any gear its pretty scary. IDK how good of a rider your son is but I think you would be better off with a 65 or maybe a bigger 4 stroke.

Jim, my advice to you is "Honda or nuttin' ":D :blah:

id get him a kx or rm 65 dont jump him to a 85 yet bad expirience might discourage him, if he makes a smooth transition onto a 65 he ll be more confident then when he goes 65 to 85 be a piece of cake

lmfao:D i crapped my self on that bike:eek:

i would find someone who has the 65 and the 80/85 and let ur son ride it. See how he feels on it. And how he does. Dont forget that even if u get a bike thats to big/small, u can always sell it and get the right one
