Im thinking about buying a 1999 400ex from a friend of mine. I know how he rides and I know hes ruff on it. He said hes totally rebuilt the entire quad, and hasn;t had any problems yet. What do I need to check when I'm buying it. I got screwed out of the last used quad I bought...and I ain't bout to get screwed over on this deal...please help.

It's a '99 and has been rode hard. May not be a good buy. What exactly has been rebuilt? Motor, bearings, suspension, intake, exhaust,..... Many things to consider when buying a used vehicle, especially when you know it has been rode hard.

If it is dirt cheap and you have the money to fix it up how you want it, it could be a good deal.

Hes done a complete rebuild on the engines. He says he rides it everyday and doesn't have problems with it anymore. He will sell it to me for 1800 with the 430 kit on it (I think thats what it is...I'm coming from a Blaster and the 240 big bore kit was big to me:p ). But now Im just trying to figure out what I'll have to replace if any.

well 1,800 bucks is cheap and if need be u can pick up a really good engine from ECA for around 800-1000 bucks so u dont need to worry about it but throughly inspect the frame if he ride it hard put your ear close the cylinder and see if ya hear ticking squeaking or a grinding noice get ready to pay go through all the gears throughly and just look at the overall condition of the quad and see if its been taken care of. a quad can be ridden hard but still be taken care of lol check the calipers and see if they are frozen and if the pads are good cause if not be ready to pay lol well thats it man hope all goes well!

430? 426 is the usual number and I belive is last overbore on the stock cylinder. If that goes you will need to resleeve the cylinder.

For $1800 and everything else is ok, frame, shocks, brakes, bearings, electrical, it could be a good deal. I bet you will have to dump some money into it over the next year or so to keep it up and running.

426 is it then. I had a Blaster...and thats y i can't member what the bore is..and Im tired of having to repair it because I had it since the end of May, and it broke in June, got it running in the middle of Auguest...now its messed up. I spent around 1900 this past summer trying to get it running (1000 for bike, 900 for rebuild and shocks...and I quit with 2 strokes and blasters!! Honda all the way!!!

But thanks for all the help ya have giving me so far

This might be out of tune, but I was visiting my local dealer today, and a brand new Yellow 400EX was going for $4600. There practically giving them away. Almost makes me wanna buy one and put my motor and plastics on it.
