I guess it depends on who you ask. I would say the greatest bands/singers are the ones that have had the most positive influence on people to copy them/or start thier own bands, or maybe they started a new sound that became one of the standards of the music world.
Maybe it might be better to ask, what Bands have had the greatest influence on us?

I can name about 20 right off the top. A few are not bands, but all have had a big influence.
Led Zepplin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Metallica, The sex pistols, The Pretenders, AC/DC, The Clash, Eric Clapton, BB King, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, The Temptations, Diana Ross, Van Halen, Aretha Franklin, Pink Floyd, Hank Williams, George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Garth Brooks, Elton John, Muddy Waters, Madonna, James Brown, The Beastie Boys, The Fat Boys, Prince, Run DMC. I'll throw Tom Jones in there too, hes just oozes cool.

metallica tops the list, no doubt about it. they have proven they can play almost any kind of song, heavy, fast, melodic ballads and even a mixture of all of them in 1 song and it always sounds good. they have had more influence on new bands than you can imagine, and Master of Puppets is the most complete thrash album ever release, not to mention the first thrash album to sell 500,000 copies.
they played with a symphony for god's sake, and it sounded awesome
2nd is a tie between black sabbath, led zep and nirvana. all 4 of these bands have had more influence than all the others and if not for them music now would probably be not worth listening to.

curt, you are right nirvana cant carry a tune in a buckett, but it looks like thats what it took to change music in the 90's.

i dont know if id call them the best band ever but im listing to mudvayne right now........ a world so cold has to be one of my favorite songs. it gets me so pumped for some reason. i had it on while i was snowboarding. it turned into a blizzard out there and everyone went inside while i stayed at the boardpark just dishing out huge while this song was playing

i used to hate icp like no other, i dont like them personnaly that much, i like some of there music, my buddy who is all about them has met all of them and has shown me there music isnt always bad. they do have alot of music that really sucks tho. ne ways i have not a clue what i would say is the best band in the world, theres so much music i havent heard. :ermm:

Well I would say Metallica also they set the stage for what some other bands strive for. There are not afraid to got out on a limb and try something new. where most of the other bands sound the same which gets boring after a few albums. They got attitude like they dont give a @#$% what people say. and more and more people jump on the bandwagon from the newer generation that never heard of metallica at there start of there carreer.
I would also say PHish is another great influential band with one of the Biggest followings Like the Dead They Played for 75,000 this past August in MAine. not too many band could fulfilll that quote like these two.

All the other bands are good but not as a "ICON" status
