250x decompression problems

When I bought my 250x, it had no decompression cable. I bought one ($25!) and now I found out that the decompressor lever is not functioning. Would I have to take the crankcase side cover off to fix this? Is this hard to do?

On the other hand, could I just leave it? Will it damage the engine or just make starting harder?

most are unhooked anyway, the side cover has a piece that works off the kickstart, your's is more than likely disconnected in the valve cover, when it's idiling turn the lever"on the head" with your hand and see if you feel anything, i wouldn't worry about it

it doesnt hurt a thing having it off..... just makes it harder to kick over
